I’ve recently gotten married and we’ll be moving to a different city soon on account of my husband’s job. However, we won’t be shifting to the new house right away as we’ll be going on holiday for two months in about two weeks time and have decided to shift to the new house when we return. As we won’t be shifting over right away, I’m not terribly motivated (I have not even begun packing anything except my clothing/personal items) and rather feel like simply tossing everything into boxes and letting the movers worry about that bit. At the same time though, I don’t want to procrastinate too much and have a huge, unorganised mess to contend with when we return. Did anyone else feel that way? And does anyone have any advice to make moving easier or more organised?
You guys are a newly wed couple, I am assuming that you don’t have much junk in the house that you want to get rid of.
Start packing the rooms that you don’t need. Move from room to room and mark those boxes. If you have a garage or basement, move the packed boxes there so your access to different part of the house remains open.
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
which is the most difficult room to pack? kitchen? basement? store room. Start with that. The motivation should be that if you manage to pack that difficult wala room before leaving for holiday, when you return, you will be totally knackered and the good news will be that the difficult thing would already have been done !! definitely works !
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
In addition to what the above posters have said, create an inventory of what you’re packing in each box. When you’re looking at 25-30 boxes at the end, it’s very difficult to remember what you put where. Also you can start by separating out valuables from the stuff that’s going with movers - jewelry, expensive electronics and clothes, documents etc.
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
I just moved about 4 months ago and I had a few key strategies that helped immensely:
-
Make 3 designated spots for “keep” “donate” “toss”---- this is the easiest way to stop yourself from packing unneccesary items that you no longer need or use, and will ensure you don’t bring clutter to your new place
-
When packing items in your boxes, after you tape/seal the box, label/mark each box clearly with not only the room the box needs to go to (kitchen, master bedroome etc, with a short description of the contents like dishes, pots and pans, knick knacks) but also with a “A” “B” “C” as classfication for the urgency the box needs to be opened or unpacked…“A” being immediately, “C” meaning it can wait, the items in the box are not for immediate or everyday use
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
easiest way is to contract out the moving to a professional movers. they will do all the work [packing, moving etc]. it will cost you a bit extra but it’s worth it. you just have to pack your personal items.
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
To get yourself motivated start with the ‘fun’ packing first.. makeup, clothes and so on ![]()
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
^Deeba, you are quite right about that. Makeup and clothes are about the only things I’ve packed so far lol ![]()
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions!
CB, don’t start with the kitchen. In fact, your bedroom, your bathroom and kitchen should be the last three rooms one should pack. You would be needing them till the last day.
Re: Moving/Packing Advice
I agree…kitchen should be the last thing packed up
