Moving house and packing the stuff....

Any good tips?

PS: I don’t have any heavy furniture or white goods but a lot of books, kitchen stuff, clothes etc.

Shall I buy cardboard boxes or lots of strong bin liners?

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

go to nearby supermarkt and ask for cardboard boxes.. they always have plenty of sturdy ones!
Also make sure you label each box with the items in it.. it would save you time and hassle while unpacking!

Last but not least, Start packing... put away the things you don't need.. you will be surprised how convienent that gets in the final days of moving!

I used boxes for kitchen items and books and for cloths I used heavy duty trash bags. They are very easy to handle.

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

i used garbage bags for pretty much everything..dishes were packed in these giant shoeboxes (that held knee-high boots) that i had.

Agreed!!
you can also buy big boxes from U-haul for your comforters/pillows etc.
Start early and label all the boxes!! My husband didn't label any of his boxes when we were moving and it was such a hassle to find his dern stuff!

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff…

Do not use garbage bags. :omg:

Get boxes! Label them and do room by room.

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

Yeah I'm gonna label all the boxes this time inshallah and I'll throw all the junk before moving to new house rather than taking it with me.

CP

For clothes I think garbage bags are fine...no?

Depends on the neighborhood. LOL in my old hood, it was seen as shady business :omg:

Yeah I guess for clothes, action room ki sheets, wagera wagera is fine.

LOL

I don’t care what my neighbors think of bin liners. :snooty:

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff…

^ Exactly.

CP, your hood is obviously shady, for people to think that. Hareem is not moving to a shady area :snooty:

Boxes for hard goods - china, books, toiletries, shoes etc

Heavy duty bin bags for soft goods - clothing, soft toys etc.

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

Get 40 Gallon garbage bags from COSTCO that will take care of all cloths, comforters, bed sheets and much more.

Get boxes from UHal. They have pretty good quality boxes in different sizes. Make sure you pack and label the boxes. It will really make the moving easy.

and finally the most important thing, GET RID OF JUNK NOW.

:k:

Our membership for COSTCO just expired and I think we don’t have UHal in England.

I have some boxes saved from previous moves…but need at least a dozen more.

I hope this is going to be for the last time for a long time that we’re moving, it’s such a hectic.

I can recommend banana boxes as they are very strong and can be stacked up too. Don't forget to put your essentials in one box and label it so you can find it asap. Clearly labelling all boxes will help you so much hun, it helped us no end.

As for clothes, this may sound bizarre but are you taking your furniture with you? If you are is there no way of taking your wardrobes/dressers as they are secured with heavy duty tape/ropes so when you get to the new pad you can stick the furniture in the right room and won't have to shift through boxes to find clothes?

Bags are good for soft toys, and other items that don't get damaged too easily.

If you've got time I'd recommend purchasing a roll of bubble wrap off ebay-its cheaper on there and you can wrap are real delicates and put them in a box and label it breakables etc.

If you have any outdated popcorn (the ones you pop in a pan) you can pop them and use them for padding in the boxes for delicates too.

Hope the advice comes in useful.

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

get boxes from the liquor store! they're meant to hold all those heavy bottles so they're ideal for packing glassware, dishes, and books.

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

be careful with usin garbage bags!!! I used to have a laundry service come pick up my husbands hirts, I'd put them in a garbage bag on my front porch. One morning, our garbage men decided that I left a bag of garbage on my porch and tossed it into the garbage truck and away they went with just about all my hubby's work clothes :(

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

Ms Hareem, I also want to wish you many years of health and happiness in your new home.

Is it a farm like you were thinking about?

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

yes, cardboard boxes are great for books and for anything...rest a u-haul truck and u are on ur way...good luck. is it intown or out of town move of urs? i cam help u :)

Re: Moving house and packing the stuff....

I would recommend that you go buy boxes. they will be sturdier, easier to move, protect stuff inside better. I woud defintely recommend getting wardrobe boxes with the hanging bar, this way yoiu can just take clothes out of your closet and hang them directly and not go through the effort of taking them off hangers and putting them in bags etc and then putting them back on hangers.

if you dont want to shell out money for watdrobe boxes I would recomment that you tie hangers with a cord and then another cord around the clothes, make clusters of 12 or so, more will be too tough to carry and things will also start slipping and falling.

stuff that is not breakable, toys and stuff, just toss them into boxes, no use with the hassle of doing packing box tetris for those. you may need a few extra boxes but well worth the time saved.

and yes, take the opportunity to purge old unneeded stuff, wrong sizes, stuff you dont wear or use etc. less stuff to move plus the new place will start with a clean slate.

for dishes get dish boxes, and wrap each item in paper..get the clean packing paper, newspapers may work too, but sometimes their ink would just get on everything and you will be stuck with having to wash all dishes once u unpack.

Princess

we're not taking the furniture because it doesn't belong to us....we were renting a furnished property. Thanks for the tips though.

that's a nice idea. Thanks SGS.

Sorry but I couldn't stop laughing at this. lol

Thanks. No it's nothing like a farm...lol. We need a lot of money for that, it's a small 3 bed house with a good sized garden. I' not up for the farm anymore....I've seen it that it involves a lot of hardwork and the ladies I met who own farms are literally in tatters.
Homeschooling is enough for me to handle but I'd like to have a big house in countryside.....so we're planning to move to middle east or central asia through hubby's work after we're done with house move to save money for our future plans inshallah.

thanks par aqap canada main hain aur main UK main. :)
