moving beyond images

This picture was taken in 1993 in Sudan by South African photographer Kevin Carter. A starving Sudanese toddler was trying to approach a feeding centre while being stalked by a vulture. The photographer did not directly help this child. This picture raised millions of dollars in funds for many relief agencies. In 1994 Kevin Carter won the Pulitzer Prize; less than four months later, he committed suicide at the age of 33, writing in a note, “The pain of life overrides the joy to the point that joy does not exist.”

Africa Guide provides links to literally dozens and dozens of development/aid orgs.; we have some Guppies here who are studying/working in diverse backgrounds - if you have the time and the resoures, there is DEFINITELY a niche for your skills, if even for a few weeks, in some impoverished African countries. The site also provides links to wildlife preservation orgs., IF your background lies there. If anyone has any links to other aid orgs. (whether or not Africa-related), please post here with thanks in advance.

If the above is not feasible, try Online Volunteering - while living in the UK, use your technical or grammatical skills to help out an org. based in Bangladesh, or help an aid org. to translate documents from English-French or Urdu-English, etc. without having to leave the comfort of your home. Lots of different opportunities available.

Nadia_H, thank you so much for sharing.. there is something about this image.. something very painful and basic.. That people can be denied the simplest necesseties of life. I was looking for a few sponsor a child sort of things, the advertisements you see on TV all the time.. would you have any information regarding that? Any organizations which provide direct aid to the suffering and keep the donor informed?

Maybe you should leave a few organization names in the thread so that a little difference can be made through gupshup. The Online Volunteer site is very impressive.

Thank you for sharing Nadia. This pic has been posted before, but is a constant reminder of what is going on in the world, and how we need to use our resources to help those less fortunate.

I didnt know about online volunteering. Thanks for the link. Hopefully the word will spread and people will get involved. smile

. It was some powerful stuff. I was actually going to say something bad about the photographer who took the picture but …don’t have words what to say.

I will try my best.

Everytime I see this picture it makes me wanna cry..

I already sponsor a child in India and every year or so I get a picture of him showing me how much he’s grown…the smile says it all.

I started when I was 11…he was 2 I think…it’s been 10 years now…told my parents that whatever pocket money they give me to give it to him…since then I’ve never asked my parents for money..ever..and I’m a much happier person..

Nope DM - at least I dont think so, I haven't heard anything like that about this organization, and our msa's/and the muslim community as a whole has been really supportive of this organization.

The website works fine for me:)

last time when I saw it this image haunted me for days.
I just couldn’t get it out of my head, would keep comming back, it changed me greatly.
