What do you take with you? What do you pack? What do you need?
As most of you know, my rukhsati is soon and it’s twice as much work this time around because not only Im planning the dholkis, 2 mehndis (from each side), wedding and valima (thank god for wedding planners!!!) but I also have to pack up and move down to Miami to be with my husband. Alhumdulillah, he and I have FINALLY found and shortlisted some gorgeous apartments facing the bay around Biscayne Bay/ South Beach area (yayy, Im really excited about the view!), and will start setting up the place way before the wedding so that it’s done and ready to move into right after. We are all done with the shopping list for setting up the home, however, I want to know what to pack and take with me. I want to start taking stuff there every month when I go see him, and my sister has reminded me that I should start this month.. eeek. So Im panicking because I have so much stuff in my parents house and need your help/advice. What did you take with you?
We did all our shopping from the city where we moved...so i only took my clothes/personal belongings...and the stuff we absolutely couldn't leave behind...
how much stuff do you have? I'm assuming you'll be flying by plane to visit him, perhaps you can ship your belongings to him if there's a great deal of stuff. remember nowadays you'll be charged for your first and second check in bag, compare that to how many times you plan on going to miami prior to your wedding and even after your wedding, since I'm sure you'll be back to visit your family.
uship.com (basically people are bidding to ship your stuff and you can compare it to others who have moved to similar locations).
if you do decide to take the items yourself, start with your necessities, pack at least 1 full suitcase of paki outfits and another suitcase full of american clothes. Obviously take your makeup, jewelry (take this last, so it doesnt get lost), handbags, shoes, etc... Next start with what you really cant live without and don't want to spend money purchasing in miami.
oohhh i also forgot to mention, if you have a bridal registry, make sure the items are sent to your miami address so you dont have to worry about dragging them with you when you head to FL
what you take with you really depends on your personal preference. i'm trying to keep it minimal cuz my fiance has lived alone for years and i dont want him to feel overwhelmed with all the little girly stuff that can pile up and make a brand new apartment look like a huge mess. this is why, i'm only taking a few of my really nice clothes n shoes but really trying to keep makeup, accessories, etc to a small organize-able amount.
its a great idea to take a little stuff with you over the next few months and set it up as you go. cuz unpacking your entire life right after the wedding will be soo much work and exhausting.
since you aren't getting married really soon i'd recommend taking things that you definitely won't need until after marriage. maybe winter coats, sweaters, n boots? also memorabilia like high school year books n albums etc that you would definitely want to keep but still you know you won't absolutely need to see them within the next few months.
I also started sending stuff with hubs a few months before the rukhsati. my stuff included household things such as kitchen stuff (everything from appliances to crockery), bedsheets/spreads, shoes, clothes, bags, some decorative stuff and very few personal items such as books, certificates from work etc. It wasnt so bad for us since hubs usually drove in to see me so we could load up the car.
In your case, since you will be flying, i would only take what is aboslutely necessary. Rest you can always buy local.
P - i'd suggest you take an entire suitcase everytime you go. i know i'm going to start doing that in January once i'm a few months closer to the actual wedding and moving date. but i think taking one suitcase everytime you go and collecting it at his pad is the way to go. this way when you actually make your BIG move, you'll still have a bunch of stuff to take with you, and some of the stuff you don't need today can already be there. i'd organize your stuff by summer, spring, fall, winter, desi, work...and go from there. i think its wise to start planning and sending stuff off, so when you move, you can take what's of utmost importance. buy some luggage too - there are great deals at the moment :)
start by taking clothes u know u arent going to wear anytime soon because of the current weather u may be having. maybe in the next couple trips u can take furniture and stuff like that that u may want in ur new place. it wont take u more than a couple trips to shift all ur stuff over, so u have nothing to stress about! good lucK!
