Movies and films

I’ve never felt this media to be especially strong or powerful in the telling of a story. In the relatively short time-span, the plot can not become too complicated. I’ve felt the drama serials and books are a stronger medium than movies and films. Maybe this is because I was exposed to these more than movies in my childood.

Do you feel that movies(art or otherwise) are an especially strong medium, and why?

Mulan, the disney movie, one of my all time favourites. Usually they are the best movies, the plot is kept simple, and its oddly like watching a good bollywood flick. There is plenty of humour and it serves its purpose...to entertain.

Re: Movies and films

I have to admit, to me books happen to be the strongest medium in terms of being able to effectively convey plot, theme, and characterization. I have read several books that are far better than their movie counterparts. You have to understand, movies are made for the box office, exposure, ratings, and hype, not necessarily for the pupose of a illustrating a “good” storyline. Therefore, alot of times, the plot, etc. tends to get lost somewhere in the movie. Witness that most anyone will tell you that the book version of a movie tends to be far better than the movie itself.

Its a strong medium if you want to have an influence on people's thoughts/opinions. Mainly because more people have the time to head out to the movies for a few hours, rather than spend many more hours following a TV drama or read a book.

However, in terms of the writer/scriptwriter - mediums like books and tv dramas are better - they get to really develop the idea because they have more time to work with.

I definitely do, YES! Obviously a lot of the time, provoking an emotional reaction isn't a prime objective for a lot of movies, but I do believe film can "touch" you.

Most of the film examples I can name are "Set It Off", "American History X", "The Accused" and "Boyz N The Hood" are all strong, powerful films that left a lasting impression.
