DEADLY AFFAIR

June 10, 2005 – A Queens husband beat and strangled a man believing he was protecting his innocent wife from unwarranted harassment — not knowing the man was her secret lover, authorities said yesterday.
Mohammed Hanif, 41, and his accomplice, Farhan Ahmed, 22, choked the victim, doorman Arshad Mahmood, 42, with a scarf and smashed him in the head with a metal pipe before dumping his body on 54th Avenue in Elmhurst Tuesday night, according to a law-enforcement source.
“They were proud of it,” said a police source, adding that the men were shocked to be placed under arrest after telling their “heroic” stories.
Both men, Pakistani natives, were awaiting arraignment in Queens Supreme Court yesterday on murder, weapons and evidence-tampering charges, according to a spokesman for Queens DA Richard Brown.
Their statements, together with the accounts of police and relatives, lay bare a bizarre immigrant soap opera replete with X-rated photos, smuggled immigrants and an incestuous love triangle.
A source close to the investigation said the dead man had been carrying on an affair with Zahida Hanif — Mohammed Hanif’s wife and the victim’s own cousin — even taking a set of nude pictures of the woman. Afraid of the shame that news of the affair might bring her, Zahida told her husband that Mahmood — a father of five who had been married for 19 years and worked as a doorman in a Murray Hill apartment building — was blackmailing her in an effort to get her into bed, a police source said.
The family was sticking by that story yesterday.
“He got what he deserved,” said Abdul Nasir, 33, Zahida’s brother. “He knows what he did to my sister wasn’t right. He was obsessed with her. He wanted to be with her.”
Zahida confirmed that story, saying, “Everything he said is true.”
But cops believe there was an affair, although Zahida may have ended it at some point.
“There may have been a sexual relationship that went from consensual to coerced,” said a law-enforcement source.
The second suspect, Ahmed, appears to have had a different motive.
Police said the dead man shelled out $25,000 to smuggle Ahmed, his brother-in-law, into the United States. Ahmed had been paying off the debt at the rate of $750 a month, but had quarreled with Arshad and moved in with the Hanifs. Mahmood was angry at being stiffed, relatives said.
