Joaquin Phoenix just OWNS the role of Johnny Cash. A truly amazing performance. Heartbreaking, funny, sexy, and moving.
But the total revelation is Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. Just Amazing.
And, just like most reviews have pointed out, both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were both great, and deserve Oscar consideration when the time comes along. I came away thinking about how much less appealing the movie would have been with another actor/actress in either one of their spots.
The whole thing was beautifully shot, directed (shout out to James Mangold). The production design was amazing too from the hair and the clothes to the ashtrays. Just Perfect.
