Shahid Afridi had stepped down as Pakistan’s T20 captain after the World T20 but chose to continue playing in the format © IDI/Getty ImagesA move to give Shahid Afridi a farewell during the T20Is between Pakistan and West Indies in the UAE has not materialised, with the former captain left out of the squad for the three matches. The PCB confirmed the move had come from selection committee head, Inzamam-ul-Haq, but it fell through in the absence of the board chairman Shaharyar Khan, who is recovering from surgery, and executive committee head Najam Sethi, who is on vacation in England.

Afridi had plans to retire at the end of the 2016 World T20 in India and Shaharyar had confirmed this earlier in the year saying, “He is also a Pathan and I am also a Pathan and once the agreement is done between two Pathans it can’t be changed.” However, before the tournament, Afridi revealed that he wasreconsidering his retirement due to “huge pressure” from friends and family.
Following Pakistan’s poor performance at the World T20, and criticism surrounding his leadership, Afridi stepped down as captain but chose to continue playing in the format. However, he has not played for Pakistan since then, with the new selection committee not seeing him as a part of their plans for the side.
Afridi had succeeded Mohammad Hafeez as Pakistan’s T20 captain in September 2014. In his second stint as captain, Afridi led the side to 11 victories in 24 matches but his personal form dipped. He averaged 14.65 during this period with a best of 49, and took 20 wickets.
After the 2016 World T20, Afridi turned out for Hampshire in Natwest t20 Blast the scoring 191 runs at 17.36 in 12 matches and taking nine wickets. He also played only one match in the recent domestic National T20 tournament, before pulling out due to fitness concerns. He reportedly underwent an MRI scan on his knee and was later trained in Karachi as a part of injury rehabilitation. He was also optimistic that he would be selected for the series against West Indies, but he was ignored.
However, days after the team announcement, the Urdu newspaper Jang carried a report that claimed Afridi would be selected as the 16th player for the three-match series against West Indies in the UAE, as part of a planned farewell.
Afridi hinted at that possibility and his retirement during a media session in Karachi, but the statement was seen as ambiguous.
“I have put no pressure on the board nor they on me but whatever happens it will be good and set new precedents,” Afridi said in a statement in Karachi. "I have always noted that in Pakistan there is no tradition of players retiring gracefully, even the big names. Every player wants to go out on a high and I am no different.
"Players must exit respectfully since the ones who serve the country with distinction deserve honour. I have had a discussion with Inzi bhai (Inzamam-ul-Haq) who is an elder to me and we will do what is beneficial to both Pakistan cricket and my own self. This would allow players to decide themselves when it is the right time for them to retire gracefully and with dignity."
Afridi’s decisions to retire from other formats were also surrounded by uncertainty. His decision to retire from Test cricket, immediately after leading his side to a 150-run loss against Australia at Lord’s in 2010, was seen as abrupt. His ODI retirement, too, was muddled for some time before he decided to quit the format after the 2015 World Cup.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

It is real mean and pathetic on part of PCB to not give him a farewell match. We have treated all our cricketing heroes like this before. This needs to change. He has given a lot of pleasure to a Pakistani fans both with ball and bat.

Shame on PCB.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

No hold on EB, Farewell is due when a cricketer retires. He has said repeatedly he has no plans to retire right now. And i’m not talking about previous retirements, right now he wants to play more. So what exactly should PCB plan a farewell for?

Do you remember the last T20 in worldcup, India? Every player gave him standing ovation as that match was thought as his last match but right after that he said who is retiring, men te majak karrya tha.. I believe ppl in PCB know his tactics and might be sick of it.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

U r been sarcastic right?

Mohammad Yousaf
Javaid Miandad
Rashid Latif
Waqar Younis
Wasim Akram
Saeed Anwar
And
Imran Khan

I was personally invited in their farewell series and ceremonies by President and PMs of Pakistan

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

What if one party was a pathan, and the other a Kamath?

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

No he was negotiating with PCB for a farewell match which they should have given him also announcing it will be a farewell match, with all my reservation about the guy I dont think he would have made a mockery of it like Younis did.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

I wasnt aware of any farewell matches for these guys.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

Why do we need to ‘organize’ a series as farewell? If a player has brain and commitment, he could simply plan and say ‘that upcoming game will be my last’, and he will already get respect/honor at the end of that game… no?

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

Thats what I’m saying. I dont think PCB is trusting his words any more so wuts the point of throwing a party for nonexisting reason.

Exactly.. but Afridi and drama are inseparable.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

200% agreed. shame on PCB for mistreating a hero like this. shameless folks. he has given so many memories to us.

just negotiate hard with him upfront that if you are asking for a farewell match then fine, this will be a a farewell match and you will not be selected again. why would he dishonor himself?

and once afridi said that he will retire from test cricket and ODIs, i dont think he decided to come back…

anyway, afridi after 21 years of service, deserves a proper sendoff. kon samghayee idiots sitting in PBC

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

So then, why do we need a farewell match for a below average player…when i say below average iam referring to his stats both in batting and bowling

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

We have to start putting right this wrong. we should have a tradition of giving our retiring players an appropriate sendoff.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

I agree to that..but for the Players who have out-standing record or averages above 40 in batting and below 25 on bowling…

This guy was over-hyped sensation and if i am correct most irresponsible batsman with maximum number of ducks..

He should have been out of team long long ago…

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

I always thought the lower ones bowling average the better.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

He has given a lot to Pak cricket even though I have not always agreed with his antics but lets give credit where it is due. Who can forget those two sixes against India or many other occasions where he saved Pak. His bowling apart from the last few years has been very good.

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

sarkar there is no one on this forum who can talk more about averages and statistics than me…but there are certain times when you move away from statistics and do what is right. yes he was irresponsible but hey afridi lala gave us so many memories to cherish… so many. if he was that bad he would not have played for Pakistan for 21 years. every skipper wanted him one way or the other.

so whats the big deal if we let him play one last time, stand up to say him good bye, and let him respond to our claps one last time.

but no, hanibal jee has opened the full kachari court… he wants to bring back back fazal mahmood from his grave, give him a farewell match first!!!

kar lo baat

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

sarkar remember his century in india on 42 balls…when he blasted anil kumble so bad that helpless indian spectators started to cry live. since i am labeled as half indian, i also started to cry with them :teary1: :teary1:

and remember what he did to bangali crowd and to hasina wajid in asia cup when those bangali girls were crying so hard … at that time i was laughing though  and was telling lala aur maro :biggthumb:

and those 2 sixes against india in asia cup

those brutal 70+ runs in south africa with one of the largest six in cricket history

and probably 100 more such memories

afridi lala was a super star in his own way

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

Who said you were half Indian , you are full Indian. Jiaye Hind

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

Lol

Saray babay meray peechay paR gaay hain…

Now when u guys are showing such desperation, i ll allow him just one match… and iam sure he is going to make a fool of himself there…he could have not played that match and saved some dignity…

PS : Moreover, i heard an indian actress have said if Afridi is not selected then she’ll do some kind of striptease in front of Pakistani consulate…i hope TLK can shed some light on this

Re: Move to give Afridi farewell series shelved

babay? tera bera gharaq ho jayee hani, since when i have become a baba? bhai am in my 20s…
