Re: move back to pakistan for study

its possible. i know two people who moved to Pakistan to get their med degrees, both came back, one to Uk and one to US, and they are doing well in their fields.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

You can try if you think it'll work for you. Although my goal is also MD, I would not move back to Pak for my degree. I think I would prefer to stay in US for my studies if I plan to work in US or anywhere in the world.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

if you want to become a doctor then do your undergraduation in US
Problem is that if you do it from pakistan your degree will not be recognized any where in the world except Pakistan.and in order to practice in US you have to write USMLE which will take abt 2 years so in end your time factor will be equal wheter you do it from US or Pakistan.
In UK you have to gave PLAB exam inorder to get licence to practice and even after that geting in to Training post for overseas qualified graduates is close to impossible. It took me 1 year to get Training post in UK.
so better do it from US and after that you can go any wherelke UK ,Australia,Newzeland but with pakistani degree you have to gave additionl exams every where.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

salam :-)

im currently doing my MBBS in karachi. I went back from Canada to study there.
Almost done my first year now. I personally think its great to study there...you might not get as many resources/facilities available to you in the uni/college over there...but the actually learning experience...the books...the parhayee...i think its awesome. especially in 3rd year when u get ur ward experience...i've heard from people its very satisfying n some things ur gonna see in pakistani hospitals which u wont even see in america...lol!
also...the college life is awesome!! studnts here study like full time have no life!!
they sit in there uni library 24/7 n study study study...especially med students..
over there its both...u get fun...AND parhayee!
even if u want to work in the US or canada after... u can still do ur MBBS there n come here right the exam n stuff...its not hard...trust me...
stats say...people from my college who got position n got 90 above n went back to america to rite the USMLE..etc...they also got a 90% in there!! so...u can guess now...!! its pretty cool!

we have a LOTTTTTTTTT of foreigners in our college..lotsa ppl come from US/Canada....!
my friends in 3 rd year they all came back in the vacations for 2 months n did their electives here....at hospitals..!! its a good experience....they actually recognize our college accept us as med. students n let us work...!! n u shud alwayz do electives where ur planning on working....ALWAYZ! its good to put in ur resume n stuff...same thing bout the residency.

newayz....btw...im in DUHS...:-)
if u have any questions regarding med skools in pakistan feel free to pm me n ask :-)

Re: move back to pakistan for study

So what's the requirement/prerequisites for a med student who wants to study in pak.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

u mean wat u have to take in highschool…?
just the usual…sciences (biology chemistry physics)…well…i dun think u need grade 12 physics or math but dont quote me on that…i had all these courses so never had an issue with that…u need english bio n chem for sure tho…lol!
i think min. average to apply u need 70% atleast…but all the ppl i know who got in had like 80 above…they automatically deduct like 10% when they convert ur marks..lol!

ps: i can really look thru my admission papers n find out exact info for u if u really want me to

Re: move back to pakistan for study

I was just curious to find out about any exams they require b4 u enter the medical school in pak. Like here in US we had to take MCAT. What about in Pak.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

oh no no…thats for the ppl that are IN pakistan n applying for local seats…they all have to write the entry test n stuff but foreigners dont…they just give us the admission on the basis of our highschool marks …

Re: move back to pakistan for study

if u think u cana djust there...thn go for it

Re: move back to pakistan for study

You need a high school diploma and your transcripts which should contain the subjects of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. If you have not taken even one of them you will have to take it at the AP level in a university/community college so it will be accepted here (as long as its a science based physics/chem whatever etc, not some “concepts” or “non science physics” that they offer sometimes).

After that you have to get an equivalence certificate from this place called the IBCC which certifies that the education you have overseas is equal to the Pakistani System of Pre-Med. This is the biggest pain in the ass to get as well. If your canadian, they deduct 10% off your overall score and if your american they deduct 20% off your total scores, they say this is cuz their easier than pakistan and to make your marks so low you can ONLY compete with other foreigners for admission and only for foreign seats. Anyway after your conversions have been done, you need 60% or more to even apply. But your only applying for a foreign seat and there are 4 seats in every govt college but the # of foreigners who actually apply and get accepted and actually decide to take the seat, are very low so if you even have 65% marks you’ll probably get a seat somewhere in Pakistan.

As for private medical colleges, Id suggest you avoid ALL of them EXCEPT Aga Khan in Karachi which is of the highest standard in the country better than all the govt colleges as well. Shifa would be my second choice of a private medical college. As for others such as baqai, frontier, I would totally avoid as even Shifa is a lil shaky since its provisional right now and doesnt have a long track record. As far as admission is concerned into private medical collges in Pak for foreigners, its pretty complicated, you have to have Sat 1 or Sat 2 tests taken, OR you have to give their entry tests etc. All that information is on their respective websites though. Admission into govt is much simpler comparatively as there is no entry test, no interview, nothing. You just get your equivalence and apply with one application form to every govt college in the country, and viola =)

Re: move back to pakistan for study

Dang!!! Most of the ^^ is pain. Anyhow, thank you yusuf and rani. One of my friend (whom I last saw about 2 yrs ago) just moved in my building today and is in medical school here in US. We will get together next week and discuss this in detail. Thanx anyways…I am leaning more towards completeing my studies in US rather than Pakistan. Whatever Allah wills inshaAllah.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

Better study in USA in which every country counts that education and it is considered to be one of the top degrees. Even Pakistan acclaims USA degree much.

Re: move back to pakistan for study

Man if you have a degree from USA and then you come back to Pakistan its ten times easier getting a job. But when it comes to Medicine, the choice about coming to Pakistan cant be JUST for medical education. You have to come here cuz you want an excuse to live in another country, live in the Paki culture for at least some part of your life etc. Thats the only way you can survive/enjoy it etc. But if your coming to Pakistan to become a doctor, and thats completely it, study and nothing else and just get out, then your best going to the carribean or something.

A lot of people have the misconception that people who are stupid and dumb and stuff come to pakistan for medical school (or medical college as they so like to rub in your face if you ever say the word school cuz they think the word school means for kids). Its totally not true, if someone can get admission here and pass through the 5 years of it their not dumb at all, they have to deal with the same amount of studying as everyone else, plus the headache of being an outsider and totally confused half the time. So it comes out equally the same in difficulty I would say.

And if someone says come to Pakistan for medical cuz its faster, than thats total BS! First off, you have to plan in high school that you wanna come to pak so you have all the pre-reqs complete by the time you graduate and get your diploma, and sometimes by the time you get your diploma watever, the paki school year has moved on and your too late (sometimes, not usually).. And then you might have to take a subject in college you never took in high school first, another year gone. So by the time you get in, your 19 or 20. Id say the average age of a first year foreign medical student in Pakistan from usa is around 20-21. The ones who are 18/19 are those studious girls who never go out and obey everything their parents say. You wont even know their a foreigner in med school here cuz they totally dress 100% the same, eat w/the other girls, live w/them and have impeccable urdu skills or probably live w/their aunt/uncle. Anyway, after 5 years, IF you get through w/out failing, you will be what, 23 if you started at 18 but no one does from the west so say 20, your done at age 25. Then you have to take the USMLE which most american med students took during their med school, while you take it after your done most likely. So factor in 6 months studying for step 1, step 2, time between tests, etc your 27. By the time you get into a residency if everything went smoothly, your 28.

In USA/Good Carribean school = first 4 years pre med at your local university, you get ure bachelors by age 22, and 4 years med school, with usmle done at the end of 4th year, your 26. Say I'm off by 2 years even your still back to 28. And even then, you dont have to sweat so much about finding a residency etc.

Cons of USA med = admission tough, studying tougher, tough schedule, LOTS of loans, books expensive, these are all opposite in Pakistan =) (some may beg to differ)
Pros of USA = see above

Re: move back to pakistan for study

Good to hear that you are on ur way to be a doctor. And you are right. Being in the field, i know that most of people that do medical school in Pakistan, do really good on the USMLE, and alot of them end up in good university programs and into good fellowships.
