Want to work your way up to Formula One? There are numerous feeder series you can start out with. Same goes for NASCAR, Indy, the World Rally Championship… just about every form of motorsport has its ladder to ascend. But Land Rover and its racing partner Bowler noticed a lack of a clear path up to rally-raid competitions like the Dakar Rally, and so they’ve teamed up to launch the new Defender Challenge.
The series pits specially-prepared Defenders against each other in a one-make series with seven rounds to take place in various locations across the UK, including stages in England, Scotland and Wales.
Bowler has modified the Defender 90 Hard Top for the series by tuning its standard 2.2-liter diesel from 122 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque to 170 hp and 332 lb-ft, fitting special Kumho tires, a full roll cage and an onboard fire suppression system. Best of all, the trucks remain street legal, so competitors can drive them to the rally, compete for glory, then drive them back home.
The vehicle will be sold exclusively by Bowler for £50,000 plus tax, with entry into the series starting at £10,000.
