After taking the International Formula 3000 championship, the Colombian driver switched to American open wheels and won the CART title in his first year and the Indy 500 the year after. He wasted no time in moving up to Formula One, winning his first of seven career grands prix in his rookie year - including the Monaco Grand Prix - and even contending for the world title two years running with Williams. Montoya then returned to the US where he won the Rolex 24 at Daytona three times and two NASCAR Sprint Cup races.
