Just read an an article in an Urdu newspaper authored by a young lady. It describes how more and more women and girls are using motorcycle (the bike) to commute between work and home, university etc and what kind of problems they may be facing, e.g. being leered at or catcalled, harassed etc by men road-users. I can certainly see the reasons why women in Pakistani society will opt for bikes but it does come with harm, for different reasons.
So all the folks living in Pakistan, do you feel this trend is on the rise and why? and for a more general discussion for all the members, do you approve of this trend, and what might be the consequences?
If a bike is more economic and helps you get where you want more easily, then why not! I think being leered at, catcalled or harassed by men would subside once it becomes the norm.
I dont think women riding a bike to work or to buy groceries is becoming a trend, not even in a liberal city like Islamabad. The girls (esp from the upper middle class households) are way too pampered to be riding on their own to work etc. Their daddies can afford large luxury cars with their own full time driver along with a maid or two who will drive them around and carry their stuff.
For some reason I assumed gals operating bikes was already a norm in Pakistan. Mmm…don’t see a prob with it. It’s easier to overtake cars when you’re running late for work.
