Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

Any advice/tips during pregnancy. Also more particularly did you do any particular exercise which helped during delivery? Some people say its good to practice squatting, and do lots of walking to prepare body. But any other recommendations. I am in my 6th month and early on I had complications so I was on bed rest. Since I was in bed, my bones I guess got a little brittle? Im not as flexible as I was before pregnancy…and now my doctor is encouraging me to walk as much as possible. But it helps to ask people who have been there/done that. All advice is very much APPRECIATED.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

Walking is really good. Also when the labor pains start, the most comfy position is on your knees and elbows. This sounds a bit strange I know but it actually makes the pains very bearable. Once you get to the hospital, you have to lay on your back (note, I waited too long with my first one, got to hospital JUST in time lol!) Laying on your back during labor makes it harder to deal with IMO so I stayed at home as long as I could and I was really able to deal with it nicely.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

I am neither a mother nor pregnant but the ones we had already delivered babies just a few days ago... probably now you can be the pioneer of the new batch of pregnant ladies on GS :-)

If you are in the last stages of pregnancy, then probably walking around alot is the best idea to have an easy and normal delivery.

Mine was painless :snooty:

Make sure you take the correct amount of vitamins, like folic acid. It helps prevent neural tube defects and other disorders.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

Speaking of food, make sure you eat before you go to the hospital. Something that I always regretted too was that right after the birth of my first, I was craving "gaseous" foods like turnips and broccoli. Gave my poor little one really bad gas pains. It helps to remember that whatever you eat, THEY eat too!!

Best wishes and congrats to you!

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

Thanks for the tips, but now that knees and elbows thing...do you mean get down on floor like your gonna do girl push-ups? But lean using your elbows?
Im afraid of delivery, hope its natural. Well Im starting to walk more, especially at work, I take an extra walk to the bathroom constantly and around the building at work during lunch. But is that enough, just walking to prepare for delivery? Any exercises which you did that prepared you for delivery.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

the best way i can describe the knee-elbow thing is...like a doggie position. It was very comfortable since the weight of my stomach with the baby was kind of hanging down and releiving the pressure/pain in my back. The only other exercise besides walking that I did was called "Kegel" exercise. (Sorry this is a bit graphic) To do it, you squeeze your muscles like you are stopping a urine stream. Hold 5 secs, release. Do this 10 times. Repeat three times a day. Continue doing these after the birth too and your muscles "down there" will return to normal much more quickly.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

Walking is very good for you, keep it up till the end and it will definitely make your labor easier. Keep as active as you are able. The position that Mo3 described definitely helps with the labor pains. Also if your hospital has a birthing pool, while I wouldn't recommend giving birth in it, it does help with the pain if you are going natural. Don't feel guilty if you do end up asking for and epidural, it certainly doesn't make you any less of a woman.

Laying on your back during labor is definitely the most painful position, especially if the baby happens to be face down. Try to stay up as long as possible, and keep them from strapping on the monitors till you are well into your labor.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

This is my 1st baby so please excuse my nervousness. Amana, were you able to know/feel how far along you are in your labor that you knew when to let them put on monitors. I dunno, I asked my doctor about Kegel and she told me they are not effective, but I think i will start them anyway...they can't hurt me.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

Ms Afro Sheen, all 1st time moms are nervous! No need to excuse!

There really isnt a way for you to know how far along you are in your labor...I mean I always heard that it gets SOOOOO REAAAALLLY bad that you cant take it and that means birth is close. But I was pretty comfy in that doggie position and so I waited and waited (terrified to go to hospital cause I knew they'd want to stick my spinal column with a needle!!) Anyway, my son was born 20 minutes after we walked in the door lol!! I'd say try to stay away from the monitors till you're 6 or 7 cm dilated.

As far as the kegels, I actually think they can and do help with birth but far more than that, they help AMAZINGLY afterwards. My first son was born so quickly that all my muscles ripped down there and I had incontinence. The kegel exercises worked so well that the sugery the docs were talking about to tighten things up became unnecessary. I did them for each of the 3 births with the same outcome, they do indeed work - if not for the actual birth, then for the healing and "reconstruction" after!

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

I had a difficult pregnancy and was told not to go to the gym or do training so i simply walked. During my labour i walked loads and i had a straight forward birth. Just walk loads.

Re: Mothers or Pregnant Ladies...Please advise...

I have to say walking is the best. Even when you go into labor, try walking around while the pains aren't unbearable. Also, gentle squatting exercises (with the support of a heavy table) worked wonders for me. I did a lot of those when I was pregnant with my first child, and I had a textbook delivery, no problems, no epidural, nothing. I didn't do them so much with my second, and it was a harder, longer labor and delivery.

In some hospitals, the nurses are okay with you being on your hands and knees during labor. Ask your doctor about it.

Kegels work wonders after delivering. It really helps a lot with getting muscle tone back in your nether regions. Mamaof3, I'm happy that you got such good results from them! I didn't get incontinent, but I noticed I wasn't as adept at holding it in. The kegels really helped make everything back to normal again.
