Is it some religious event in Christianity? I read that it was also celebrated in Greece to pay homage to the mother of the gods Rhea.

Historically it was paying tribute to the mother of all gods and now just taking a day from your busy schedule to say hello to Mom

LKK every traditional event must follow some rituals. So there must have been some rituals for this too. In Greece, they used to worship mothers of all gods on this occasion.
In early period of Christianity, the Mothering Sunday was celebrated before Easter to pay homage to Virgin Marry.

Rhea is the daughter of the primeval forces of Greek mythology, Uranus, the sky, and Gaia, the Earth. Rhea is the wife of her brother Cronus and is called the mother of the gods because she gave birth to the Olympians, Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon and Zeus.
