Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Mother Tongue :Sindhi.

Second Language:English,Hindi.

Favourite: I can read and write Greek, but will not know the meaning.

I can somehow adjust Sinhalese, but can not read that fluently.

I can speak Tamil also understand and speak Jaffna Tamil(which is not that difficult if you know Tamil-but quite mysteriously I know it better than my Tamil counterparts)

I know Gujrati…I am `forced’ to speak it because my wife is from Baroda,Gujrat. :stuck_out_tongue:

I love to learn French and German… :D.The inspiration has come from a cousin. If she could learn French and become a French teacher anybody can do it. :hehe:

I can understand Kannada but can not read or write.Even can not speak that fluently. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

What do you think what helped you in understanding so many languages?

Can you read and write your mother tongue?

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Indeed ,it is not so many languages.I can read write and speak Sindhi,English and Hindi.Since Gujrati is alot similar to Sindhi,I can follow and `speak'.Since I live in Karnataka,I can understand Kannada.I have traveled to SriLanka many times both on official and personal assignments so Sinhalese is not that a problem for me and my Tamil is better.Greek ,I tried to learn on my own and I can just read it.

My expedition' win North East SriLankan people has made me go through their rich history, have friends there and interact with them. Also I have some veryvaluable' friends in the South and my Sinhalese is good but can not read or write.

I want to learn French and German..

@muqawwee123 Bhai ..Can you identify that Pak stamp in my blog?

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Have you read Sindhi literature? Your favorite writers? I know there is a tradition of literature in your family.

Will you try that your children be well versed in your mother tongue and speak both Sindhi and Gujrati?

I earlier asked you in another thread (Sindh’s history) that Sindhi Hindus who migrated to India now avoid speaking Sindhi with their children (as we observed replies in this thread about Punjabi). How come this trend didn’t affect you? Is it a common trend or its just new generations who are upto this?

PS: if you skip answering this time, then I won’t visit you blog :snooty:

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

I had tried to learn Malay… Now when I see the word`Malay’ it is a mixed feeling in me. A feeling of sadness, hatred, nostalgia and what not…I learned a few words :stuck_out_tongue: Now mysteriously,I forgot all those words…

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Brother, indeed I wanted to reply to your thread but I indeed got carried away with time and I swear,I thought about it even this morning.Interestingly my mother had reminded me about it.

Brother this is the trend,I can see. Here in Bangalore, all the new generation people do speak Sindhi and it is mainly due to the reason that our community meetings(Samaj council) are a routine process. We conduct monthly gatherings and a couple of small meetings almost weekly. There are Sindhi classes for those who later migrated to Bangalore. Also there is a dedicated book shop where we can purchase not only books but religious materials(Topi is the one that is out of stock :hehe: ).
Bangalore’s Sindhi community is a clopse-knit one and we have one of the biggest funds available for the members.

As far as other places are concerned,I believe there is indeed a growing tendency for the people to converse in Sindhi and the trend is really motivating. My wife’s side ,both(father and mother) have their very close families in Hyderabad,Pakistan. It is a very conservative family and her parents are so strict that Sindhi is the only language to be used at home. Her grand mother had visited Hinglaj in 2011 and been to Pakistan more than 10 times.

My wife speaks Gujrati (ofcourse she was born and brought up there) and we at times converse in Gujrati.Baroda has a sizable population of Sindhis.I am going to Baoda next week and the first thing I want to get is a Topi. :)

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

What about Sindhi literature in India? Do you read it or just pass silently by the book shop at Samaj council?

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Sindhi literature in India is an arena that deserves a broad discussion.Indeed local councils are urging young people to contribute to various magazines and journals.

Have you heard about a pre-partition magazines called Phuleli' andMehran'?

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Bro,this will give you some info on new blood Sindhis.

Sindhishaan - The New Sindhis

Re: Mother tongue and favorite language

Heard about Mehran. Its an old magazine by Sindhi Adabi Board, but I think it started after partition.

Do you yourself read Sindhi literature? I just bought a Sindhi novel today ‘Piyar jo Ti-kundo’, which was published in an Indian Magazine four decades back. The interesting part is it was authored by ten prominent Sindhi writers from India including Popati Hiran nandai, Gobind Malhi, Mohan Kalapna, etc.
