Mother of Prophet

Is it true the mother of Prophet **Aminah bint Wahb was elder sister of **Halah bint Wuhayb

who was mother of Ameer Hamza?

Re: Mother of Prophet

Yes. Thats true.

They were sisters / cousins. Not sure, who was elder.

Re: Mother of Prophet

Was not it a strange marriage?

Re: Mother of Prophet

Strange in the sense? Was very much according to traditions of the era and area.

Don't tell me that this has been made controversial in certain circles like marriage of Hazrat Ayesha (RA) with the Prophet (SAW). Such marriages were norm of the day. Arab society was very much open when it came to marrying people above / below your age with hugae age differences. One can not compare it with the western standards, we are accustomed now. That society even allowed widows to marry again and there were ladies who could marry in their 40s (in some cases 50s) like a man in his 50s /60s could marry.

Re: Mother of Prophet

But the son and the father marrying at the same time to member of the same family! A bit weird!

Re: Mother of Prophet

weird according to our (read as western standards). Nomadic life and that too 1400 years was very different and I would say more progressive than our standards today.

I don't have readily available references to quote, but such marriages (age differences and father / sons marrying at same time) were acceptable norms of the day. We are very different from Arab traditions today (even many of us claim Arab ancestry). Syed families in sub-continent refused right of their daughters to marry, but Arabs did not have that tradition even 1400 years ago, before the advent of Islam. We consider it taboo if a widow marry again or a widow (man or woman) wants to marry after having grandchildren. That was not the problem with Arab society. We should give credit, where it is due.
