Will Saeed Ajmal set new record?
Currently he has 48 wickets in 2013.
Current record held by Saqlain Mushtaq at #1 and #2, with 69 and 65 wickets in 1997 and 1996.
Before the end of this year, Pakistan is scheduled to play 8 more ODI games, 5 against Sri Lanka and 3 against S.Africa. Assuming 3wickets/game for Ajmal, by the end of 2013, he will have 72 wickets, setting a new record.

Even the best ODI bowlers in history incl. Wasim, Waqar, Murali, Saqlain, Garner, Lee, McGrath etc. do not average 2 wickets per game. 2 let alone 3 is asking too much of Ajmal

For me it’s more about your skills than your records. His doosra is still almost unplayable. As far as this record is concerned, he might get close.

Interesting. Why do you rate Saqlain better than Ajmal? What about Mustaq Ahmad? I don’t even wanna mention Kaneria in the same sentence with these players.

The standard of cricket and the quality of batsmen was much better when Saqlain was bowling (mid-late 90s and early 2000s). There was one great team (Australia) and one very good team (South Africa) back then
Right now you have only good teams (England and RSA)
Take SA for instance. The South African team comprising Gibbs, young Kallis, Kirsten, Boucher, Donald, Klusener and Pollock etc. was a much stronger side
Yeh alag baat hai k iss waqt humari team itni maathi hai ke (esp. batting wise) they are struggling even when there are no great teams around!
Saqlain was very hard to score runs off during the death overs. He had even better control than Ajmal imo

Ajmal has its own class!

Ajmal is averaging about 2wickets/game this year, and has had numerous 3-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka, 3- and 4- against S.Africa.

Come on guys, whether or not current teams are better/worse from past, the guy is producing results for the team regardless of opposition… and at one point everyone says that now ODI has become batsmen friendly, if still he is getting good number of wickets then should it not be appreciated?

Well done Ajmal but I believe the record for most wickets (in all formats) in a calendar year is Murali’s 136 in 2001
