Alligators: Champion Chompers
Cheetahs chomp hard and even humans can bite through an ear, but one animal reigns supreme when it comes to possessing the strongest bite — the alligator. American alligators, Alligator mississippiensis, have the most powerful bite force ever measured. According to study published in the Journal of Zoology of London, alligators snap their strong jaws shut with a force of 2,125 pounds, or with about as much force as a mid-size sedan falling on top of someone. The 2,125-pound measured bite came from a 12 1/2 foot alligator weighing 665 pounds, appropriately named Hercules. Since completion of the study, that impressive record was broken.
Contrary to claims that Alligator Snapping Turtles possess the second strongest bite force of any animal, it has been recorded at 158 +/- 176.51 N (703±785.16 lbf) maybe 158 ± 18 kilograms-force (1,550 ± 180 N; 350 ± 40 lbf) which is lower than several other species of turtle and at about the same level as humans.
I remember once watching a documentary in which they compared the biting force of various animals..... though I don't remember the exact values but alligators, hippos and the tasmanian devils were the ones found to have the strongest jaws...
Pit Bulls have a higher bite force in psi’s (pounds per square inch). A Pit Bulls bite force are 1,200 psi, 1,800 psi, 2,000 psi, or even 2,600 psi. It’s just not true or possible. The jaw and facial anatomy of the Pit Bull is not different than any other dog breed, except for extremely short muzzled dog breeds. On average dogs can reach a bite force of 320 pounds of pressure. Granted the German Shepherd, American Pit Bull Terrier, and Rottweiler, were all three tested using a bite sleeve, and the APBT registered with the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs.
