I don’t know about being “the most” misunderstood but I think Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII, is definitely one of the most misunderstood people in history. She is either maligned as a seductress, plotter, and homewrecker or portrayed as a tragic victim of her tyrannical husband. In reality, she was a quite a complex woman and neither of these rather one note portrayals do her justice.

Anne Boleyn’s biggest crime was that she didn’t give birth to a son. Sometimes I wonder if she would’ve graciously placed her head on the guillotine with a smile if she was told that the “Bstard” daughter she conceived in passion would eventually become the Queen and rule the country for nearly half a century in such manner that the history would remember her as one of the most successful Monarchs of all time. One of the many ironies of history.
