Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

What are some of the most uncommon/unusual questions you’ve ever gotten in an interview?

Mine were:

“Why did you decide to go to this college?”
“Part of hte job is thinking up creative solution and being quick on your feet. We’ll give you an object and you tell me 3 things you would use it for.”
"Sell me something. Anything. You have 2 minutes.

And some of the more common questions I have gotten on interviews:

Tell me about yourself.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Why did you choose this major?
How would you deal with an angry client/customer?
How did you deal with coworker conflicts?
What are you rlong term goals?
How comfortable are you with horizontal vs vertical management styles?
Why do you have so many different/temp jobs?
WHy haven’t you obtained a permanent job yet?
Why should we hire you?

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Tell me about yourself has to be the most frequent question.
Someone once asked me about my personal hero.
How do I deal with criticism?
How well I get along with people from different cultures and background?
What are some of my passions?
My strategies of conflict resolution between co workers and clients.
What motivates me?

I am a very nervous interviewee :bummer:

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Everyone can talk about the strengths at length, but how do you handle the 'weaknesses' part?

It's a very tricky question. One can not say that he/she does not have any weakness. So something should be said, and yet it should not be so bad as to fail the interview.

How do you guys respond to this question?

A more specific way to ask about weaknesses related to the given job is that the interviewer asks what are the areas where you think you need to develop yourself.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Lol, certainly NOT what they wanna hear. =\

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Uncommon questions I've had:
- "How would your friends describe you?"
- Tell us something about your family
- Describe a happy memory

Common questions:
- What have you done to improve a service/policy/procedure etc etc'
- Something about equal ops eg. what is available for them, what should you look out for
- What have you done in a difficult situation, and how did you over come it
- Something about yourself :(

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Last interview, the interviewer asked me about the last book I’ve read. I told him and he goes, “what is the country of origin of the writer?” :smack:

Good thing I knew.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

First, actually think about what are your weaknesses when it comes to work, and are you trying to fix them? I'm guessing most ppl dont' realize what their own weaknesses are....I know at my past jobs, I was never really concerned with growing or learning anything--I was just in it for hte paycheck.

Try to give an example as to how you have tried to overcome those weaknesses. I think most prospective employers know we're not born knowing everything, so as long as one has the desire/effort to keep improving....it's a good sign. at least that's my take on it.

At an interview I said one of my weaknesses is speaking..lol. I stutter and get nervous wheN I am put on the spot. but I said that while I know my written comm skills are adequate, I know I need to be better at speaking, and it takes practice. they further went on to ask how I felt about public speaking (to groups of 10+ ppl)...I said I welcome the challenge. Ab dekh te hain.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

^ That's also what I've heard about answering the weakness question: be honest and use the experience to tell a story about what you learned.

Use every answer possible to tell a story, and what you learned from the experience.

Some other tough ones:
- walk me through your resume
- why do you want to work for this company
- why do you want to work in this industry

And this isn't a specific behaviour question, but case interviews for management consulting are tough!

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

I never know what to say when they say "tlel me about yourself"..... I usually talk about my last position. I've had several different jobs, and nothing in one particular field/industry.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Don’t you think you are asking for bit too much (regarding my expected salary).
Why you are not married yet :smack: .
How many projects you can handle at one time .
What’s the biggest project you successfully completed (in terms of $$$).
How do you perform under/handle extreme pressure.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

it is tricky question, never ever tell them your weakness, but you can wrap your strength as weakness. like you are workaholic, or you finish task ahead of your co-workers etc etc.

for me.

Tell me about yourself
what are your strength
what are you weaknesses
what do you think about this job
did you find any difficulty/issue related to performing tasks

keep remember, whatever you are answering it should cover the core aspect of job you are giving interview. never say no in job interview. always ask at the end of the interview, if he needs further details or has concern. this question will allow you to give last chance of whatever the question you did not performed well.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

What country are you in?

Here in teh US, questions like that are against hte law (at least I think they are)..employers are not allowed to ask that.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

And last one mostly is "Do you want to ask something?"

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Before I get a job, gone through many interviews. After first two interviews, I asked the interveiwer when they say "Thankyou, we'll call u or will let you know". So here i say to them "This is one day offer so if you wanna select me, than select me right now right here otherwise just say 'No' without any reasons". :)

After two more unsucessful interview, finally I selected by a company. :)

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

i got asked 3 weaknesses…and strengths…

2 attributes…i put them forward as both strenghts and weakness…and the interviewer was like… i see what you did there :hehe:

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

Frequent ones:

Tell us about yourself?
Weaknesses?
Why do you want to work for us?
Future plans?

Infrequent:

What's 5/4?
One employee asked me a riddle once. It was math related.
What would your professors say about you? (This one was awkward)

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

KSA.

Actually that’s a cross question because I ask for Family Visa Status, Family Air Tickets, Schooling for the kids etc… :cb:

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

That's quite common. It can become a problem if senior management is a part of the meeting.
If one is invited in a meeting then one must have something unique which other participants don't have. The expertise, the knowledge about a particular area. So one way of overcoming the fear is to convince yourself that I am the best and everyone else in the room is ignorant. That thought will boost the confidence. :D
Secondly, one should gather the thoughts first before starting talk. An idea when delivered eloquently has more effect on the audience.

I disagree with the approach of thinking that others are ignorant and you are an expert, it can give a false sense of 'confidence' based on something that is simply not true, and when asked a question, or an assumption challenged, it may just send you on a crash and burn trajectory.

Re: Most frequently (and infrequently) asked Interview Questions!

I thought it was needless to say that one should have his homework done and should know what he is talking about. Otherwise one is bound to fail sooner or later, confidence or no confidence.
