Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Gilchrist most feared batsman: Poll

June 16, 2005 18:22 IST

World’s leading bowlers have voted Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar among the top 10 batsmen who are the most destructive and intimidating in one-day cricket.

A poll of 20 international bowlers including Harbhajan Singh, Brett Lee, Muttiah Muralitharan – carried out by The Wisden Cricketer magazine – saw Australian opener Adam Gilchrist in the top spot with Sehwag fourth and Tendulkar sixth.

Other leading batsmen to feature in the list include Brian Lara (2nd), Shahid Afridi (3rd) and Andrew Flintoff (5th).

Showering praise on Gilchrist, South African bowler Makhaya Ntini said “he is just unbelievable at times” while Darren Gough rated the Australian as “one of the best one-day openers”.

New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori said “I would never say any batsman is frightening, but there are some that you are less interested in bowling to than others - that would be Gilchrist.”

“Gilchrist - I don’t want to bowl to him, man” opined Pakistan seamer Azhar Mahmood.

Responding to the rich tributes from the best in the business, Gilchrist played down the accolades.

“I guess it is an honour in a strange kind of way. But it is not something I place a lot of emphasis on. When I bat I am trying to perform a job for the team. It is not a personal battle against individual bowlers,” he said.

In 209 ODIs Gilchrist has scored 6,969 runs at a strike rate of 95, with a colossal 840 boundaries and another 94 which have cleared the ropes, and sometimes the stands.

With battlelines drawn for the Ashes series the poll also showed how highly the Australians rate Flintoff.

“Flintoff hits some big balls from good players,” admitted Jason Gillespie, while Shane Watson, who has not even played against him, rates England’s great hope as the batsman who hits the ball hardest in ODI cricket.

Top ten bowlers’ nightmares:

  1. Adam Gilchrist, 2. Brian Lara, 3. Shahid Afridi, 4. Virender Sehwag, 5. Andrew Flintoff, 6. Sachin Tendulkar, 7. Chris Cairns, 8. Matthew Hayden, **9. Abdul Razzaq, **10. Ricky Ponting.

Funny, I was just reading it on BBC site and was about to post it.

Gilchrist is sure the most devastating batsman in today’s cricket.

:k:

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Jayasuriya doesn't figure there anymore? I thought he is one tough batsman (hardhitter) too.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

I cannot believe that some people actually fear Sachin even now :hehe:

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

The first FOUR I completely understand.. infact, on their day, all of them should be #1. But from there on, I am not so sure. Especially #9. Come on guys! Who are these pussy bowlers, hain hain....?

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Faisal dont you remember the hammerring Razzaq has given to Aussies, black caps and english bowlers? He is the best finisher in the game IMO with his vast hitting range.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

On his day Razzler is more dangerous than Gilli, Afridi and Sehwag combined :snooty:

OK, now shoot me!!! but I have seen his ruthless batting last year in a crunch situation.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

razzak is as good as any master blaster when its comes to demolishing a bowling lineup.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

I am sure all the spinners in the world would agree…

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Son no need to follow all your on cricket on gupshup, try watching some cricket on tv as well. Because then you will get to know that how deadly he can be on fast bowlers and medium pacers. FYI razzak is not a very good slogger of spinners unlike other master blasters.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Oh so thats how you have the audacity to claim expertise at cricket by watching it on TV and listening to the pathetic commentary of you your idol Ramiz "I only played cricket because my daddy was a big time bureaucrat" Raja....try picking up a bat or a ball you old fart....that'll do you a word of good......

And the reason why you rate Razzaq highly is because of all those centuries and the fact that he averages in the high forties....and that he has won Pakistan so many games consistently....right.......Try looking up stats once in a while too.....Cricinfo is a good place to start, but nothing beats playing cricket at a competitive level......

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

centuries and average in high forties??? are you on dope. Razzak has an average of 30 in ODI’s. And dopehead if you watch cricket you will get to know that stats are not always right for players who usually come down the order. I don’t even want to waste my time with you otherwise I would have shown you some scored cards showing razzak’s performance and his strike rate proving that he can kick some ass.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Oops… I opened a pandora box, it seems.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

yes you did:D
very bad:nono::nono:

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

and it appears to me that that pandora box was opened intentionally by someone…

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

sachin is there and jaysurya is not there:(:(

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

What the hell is the budha ghora Cairns doing in there? He lost his batting (and bowling) a long time ago. And yes, Afridi deserves to be right up there.

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

Why dont you shut up and stop reiterating what everyone else is saying.

Btw, razzak rocks!

Any why is Sanath boy not in the list?

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

^^ that was Hilarious ... but hey , lets not get off the topic here... can we keep it civilized and towards cricket only (since its cricketrama)... if this battle has to continue.. lets move to it some other category...

Re: Most Feared Batsmen rated by Bowlers

I agree with the list except Afridi should be second and take out Mathew Hayden and Chris Cains. BTW when was the last time Azhar Mahmood bowled to Glichrist?
