People have mentioned those who follow religions to an extreme but by extension, and at the risk of offending someone (for which I apologize), the prophets of said religions can be considered the most controversial people ever.

If being controversial means revered by a group and not liked by the other group, then yes Prophets become most controversial persons in the history.
