Well, the Kul Sharif mosque is fairly recent. Located within the Kremlin walls, it’s been under construction since 1996. In the last ten years, one thousand mosques have been built throughout Tatarstan. (Press release Jan 25 03 Eisenhower Institute).

The article also states that Tatar Muslims and Russian Orthodox Christians today live side-by-side throughout much of the region.
