yesterday at our mosque a lady drove by and she asked me a couple questions…some i answered but she had a question about fitrah/fitnah…and i didnt know wat that exactly was…she wants to know the amount ur supposed to pay n stuf like b4 eid

Fitrah you mean. Fitrah is calculated based on several factors and each masjid has its own sets of rules. Some calculate it based on commodities such as rice/wheat/GURH/dates/honey etc while others take gold and silver into account which I think is a non-Hanafi practice. Our masjid calculates Fitrah based on what Pakistani familes, generally speaking, consume most: Wheat, which comes out to be about $5. A Mufti from Karachi visits our Masjid during Ramadan, Mufti Naeem who also runs a school in Karachi, explained the basic principle behind fitrah calculation but now I cannot rmember. Suffice to say that it is usually between $5-10 per person on average but could be more. One thing you must remember that Fitrah must be paid before Eidain. Hope this helps.
