More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

This is a good start. I hope more join them.

Quetta, Pakistan: Over a hundred Baluch militants fighting against Pakistani forces in the separatist-insurgency wracked southwestern Baluchistan province have surrendered and pledged their allegiance to the country, officials said on Sunday.

A group of 59 militants including two key commanders appeared before the media, along with senior politicians and government officials from the province, to announce they would end militant activities and become a “useful part” of society.

They followed a group of 47 militants on Saturday. All were given amnesty by the government.

“These people were in fact misled by the anti-state elements who are being funded by foreign spy agencies,” said Sanaullah Zehri, senior minister in Baluchistan.

“They have now pledged to lead a good life as true Pakistanis,” he said.

The militants who surrendered were from groups such as Baluch Republican Army (BRA), Baluch National Movement (BNM), and Lashkare-e-Baluchistan (Army of Baluchistan).

“We were trapped by our leaders who said they are fighting for the rights of Baluchs, but later we realised that they were enjoying their lives abroad and had pushed us and our families to a war here,” Obaidullah alias Babrak, a Lashkar-e-Baluchistan commander, told reporters.

Baluch separatists demanding more autonomy and control over gas and mineral resources have frequently targeted security forces and police for years.

Pakistan’s largest province – which borders Iran and Afghanistan – is also riven by sectarian strife and Islamist violence.

Its roughly seven million inhabitants have long complained they do not receive a fair share of its gas and mineral wealth.

This is indeed good. Baloch, Sindhi, Pashtun, and Punjabi are all parts of the same larger body called Pakistan. When a part of it hurts, or feels neglected, the entire rest of the body should feel that and do all that is necessary to address the cause rather than cover up the symptoms.

Hopefully the Government will listen to them keenly, and during debriefing of their past activities will address the reasons why they joined the movements in the first place so that the perpetrators behind them are uprooted and their exploitation of the core cause dislodged altogether. This implementation of assurance followed by complete and honest changes will allow others to stop as well.

Pakistan is a rich nation in terms of natural resources, and there is no reason why every one of its’ citizens should not be able to benefit from them mutually and be thankful to Allah for the blessings.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

Yesterday two more commanders and 37 fighters from Sibi laid down their arms and pledged loyalty to the State. Good news for Pakistan, bad news for enemies and their apologists.

I hope the State of Pakistan offers proper support to fighters and their families. Some kind of rehabilitation process should be in place so these people can go back to leading a normal life and adjust in the society.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

Before jumping for joy… How do you know these are actual former militants and not some poor sap paraded about for publicity ? The insurgency has been going on for 10 years, and now all these guys are surrendering and saying exactly what the govt wants to hear ? Almost sounds scripted…

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

^ Weren’t you the one was preaching against the glass half empty mentality?

Just like insurgency in FATA has been going on for years, but only in last 12 months that Pakistan had managed to get a breakthrough. Plenty of small time militants in FATA also surrendered before and during Zarb e Azb. Hardly a surprising thing.

The success in FATA is having a knock on effect on Balochistan as all militant’s external support and network had been blocked, and plenty of fighters are entrapped. The only difference between FATA and Balochistan is that Baloch fighters are more likely to surrender as the province has a decent enough Nationalist government who is constantly making efforts to reconcile with small level organisations.

To be honest, most of the Baloch fighters are indeed poor saps brainwashed by Waderas sitting in Western countries and receiving funds from enemy states.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

Hey, they are all paid for actors. Or better yet, children of missing people, forced to act out, so that they get back missing persons from the bloody punjabi army. Its all a huge saazish to undermine true struggle of baloch.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

Hey, this one looks and sounds suspicious. Im only calling a spade a spade. In this case, this whole thing seems a bit off.

You should be optimistic when there is reason to be. This case doesnt inspire much confidence. It seems staged.

The Baloch rebels and Taliban style religious extremists are oppisite sides of the spectrum. Baloch are nationalists, while the TTP are religious fanatics. The Baloch are fighting to separate from Pakistan while the TTP want to control it. To what degree they overlap or how much they cooperate is debatable. As far as I know there is no direct link between the Baloch nationalists and TTP in FATA, so I dont think its possible given the information at hand, to determine what impact if any the FATA situation has on Balochistan. Balochistan also shares a long border with Afghanistan and Iran (which incidently also has a significant baloch population), so how much the loss of FATA hinders the Baloch nationalists is also debatable.

So either these people are genuine formers militants, or they are petty criminals forced to claim they are. As submissive as they appear, im certain they have endured a good amount of torture at the hands of security forces… Really, its quite murky how the Pakistani state operates in Balochistan. I would take it all with a grain of salt.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

If the news is true that I hope we get rehabilitate them back into Pakistan and it’s good news, but we should address why these people join militant groups in the first place

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

This whole thing seems a bit off because we are too bogged down by scathingly brass anti state propaganda when it comes to issue of Balochistan that we simply don’t think State can possibly make any positive progress. The State can make staggering breakthrough and achieve unexpected level of success rate in far more problematic region of FATA with a change of military leadership and warfare tactics , but somehow those same changes cannot make handful of small time Baloch nationalists to lay down arms? Militants in FATA can lay down arms, but Baloch insurgent can’t?

Truth of the matter is, both Baloch insurgents and FATA militants are territorial terrorists who have mercilessly killed innocent people and Pak Fauj Jawaans. Baloch separatists just like FATA militants want to take full control of the territories they have inhabited through violence, ethnic cleansing or religious hatred. The difference in their ideologies or objective is largely irrelevant.

As with your claim that these people may have been forced to claim who they are because they look submissive or like petty militants, there had been numerous intelligence reports acknowledging the fact that many of the locals recruited by TTP or those who voluntarily join them are often petty criminals and gangsters. So I see very little reason to doubt that plenty of those Baloch insurgents who had surrender could very be local criminals who joined separatist organisations for personal gains, and now they are only laying arms because they have realised the scarcity of their potential to fight a strong and efficient army that simply won’t give up. So just like Tribal Jirga, if Baloch Government is successful in its efforts to reconcile with less hardened but more confused militants and potentially less dangerous, then good for Pakistan.

I don’t know anyone would apply so much cynicism and pessimism over these development and accuse State of following a script and deceiving and ling o people the people. If the State really wanted to make a self important point to brag, instead of 30, 40 odd militants with one commander belonging to small and lesser known separatist organisations, they could have put forward hundreds and hundreds of people which army of commanders and branded them as BLA militants to get proper congratulations and make a huge psychological dent to the enemies.

As with link between FATA and Balochistan, well it’s all in the geography! They say all wars are explained through maps. Since FATA also borders Balochistan, a tighter border control and heavy fighting on Western front have dented the flow militants, weapons and external support to Baloch militants through FATA/Afghanistan. I wish it was the case, but Pakistan is not necessarily fighting isolated enemies. They’re all in it together to harm the State and its people, by any means necessary.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

You may be right… We just dont know anything for certain however. I will reserve judgement pending more information and some genuine verifiable results on the ground.

Re: More than 100 Baluch militants surrender in Pakistan

The end goal matters more than anything. It will determine if this was a start of something great or just a blip in the timeline.

Unfortunately, hindsight is required which will happen in the next 5-10 years.
