Constitution of India allows its each and every citizen to hold any post irrespective of his or her religion, cast, creed, or color.
The ignorant brother who is talking about Sonia Gandhi not becoming PM doesnt know anything about Indian Political scene. Sonia Gandhi herself chose not to become PM of India, it has nothing to do with her not being hindu or anything. And its no hidden secret that Sonia Gandhi is most powerful individual in India politically. Any doubts?

I am not an expert of Indian politics (you aren't either) but i can tell you that Sonia's decision of not becoming a PM is enirely because hindus in India don't consider her Indian enough (or even hindu enough if you ask BJP).
She chose NOT to become PM because she wasn't a born Indian and BJP used this fact to put her under pressure, it's well known fact in India (not my personal opinion).
She still holds all the INHERITED powers NOT because Indians are tolerant (don't make me laugh :P) but because of her Surname.
