Apologies for typo in title, can’t edit it

The latest instalment of money that has been flowing into Pakistan since 9/11.

Let’s hope it’s monitored by the donating govt, instead of vanshing into govt pockets

Blair in £480m terrorism deal with Pakistan

Tony Blair flew into Pakistan last night on a mission to seek more co-operation from Pakistan’s president, General Pervez Musharraf, on the war in terrorism in Britain.

**Mr Blair announced a doubling in aid from £236m to £480m **over the next three years to the Pakistan Government to support “moderate” schools in Pakistan. It is part of a strategy of undermining the hardline madrassas which are alleged to have brainwashed students in extremist forms of Islam and to have provided radical converts for al-Qa’ida operations in Britain.

The Prime Minister is also seeking improvements in intelligence-sharing between MI6 and Pakistan’s powerful intelligence agency, the ISI, in spite of suspicions - denied by President Musharraf - that they have sympathies with the Taliban. British sources said it was intelligence from Pakistan that led to arrests and the summer alert over an alleged plot to blow up about 10 airliners bound for the United States from British airports.

One million people in Britain are of Pakistani origin.** Two of the suicide bombers who blew themselves up in London on 7 July last year had visited Pakistan shortly beforehand, and a British national, Rashid Rauf, is still held in Pakistan over the alleged airliner plot.**

High on Mr Blair’s agenda for talks with President Musharraf today will be the need to stop the flow of men and weapons across the leaky border with Afghanistan, where the resurgent Taliban are attacking British forces. There have been 36 British casualties this year, many in the lawless Helmand province, where British forces were deployed to protect reconstruction schemes but have become bogged down in a vicious war with the Taliban.
Senior British officials admitted the accuracy of the assessment by Tom Koenigs, the German diplomat heading the UN mission in Afghanistan, that Nato forces could not win without the backing of Afghan troops. “We have tactically defeated the Taliban, as one Nato general said, but we recognise that there are difficulties. It has to be a combination of military action and reconstruction,” said one official with Mr Blair’s party.

British commanders have complained of shortages of helicopters and armoured vehicles to protect against roadside bombs and suicide bombers. Mr Blair, determined that Afghanistan does not become a second Iraq, is urgently seeking reinforcements, and Britain will be calling for more support at a Nato conference in Riga. Although 37 nations are contributing to the Afghan force, many have rules of engagement which prevent their deployment in southern Afghanistan and Nato is still awaiting troops for a rapid reaction force there.
In his talks with President Musharraf, Mr Blair is almost certain to raise the question of the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, the al-Qa’ida leader believed to be hiding on the border, but officials made plain he would not be criticising the Pakistani leader in public. When they last met, at Chequers on 28 September, Mr Blair had to apologise privately for a leaked defence report - later dismissed as “research notes” - which said there was still considerable support for the Taliban in the ISI.

“Pakistan is not a banana republic,” President Musharraf reportedly told the German magazine Focus last week. “We have an extremely loyal and disciplined army. The secret service is made up mainly of military men.”
Mr Blair has little alternative but to accept the assurances of his key ally in the region.

Further details

UK to give $910m for madrassas, poverty

ISLAMABAD: Britain will provide financial assistance of $910 million to Pakistan to reduce poverty, reform madrassas and improve the delivery of health and sanitation services and clean water.

The commitment was made under an agreement called the ‘Long Term Development Partnership Arrangement’ signed after one-on-one and delegation level meetings between Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and his British counterpart Tony Blair at Prime Minister’s House.

Under the agreement, the UK Department For International Development (DFID) will provide Pakistan $201 million in the UK financial year 2007-08. The total funding of $910 million will cover the period between UK financial year 2008-09 and financial year 2010-11. Much of the cash will go towards promoting President Gen Musharraf’s policy of “enlightened moderation” in madrassas that have been blamed for radicalising Muslim youths, including visiting Britons. The assistance under the agreement includes financial aid, technical cooperation for capacity development, support through international organisations or civil society organisations and other forms of development assistance.

The agreement aims at helping Pakistan meet the Millennium Development Goals for reducing poverty and strengthening financial management and accountability to reduce the risk of misuse of funds. Aziz later told a press conference the grant from the UK government would help Pakistan achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Blair told a press conference in Lahore that some $38 million would be released immediately to help tackle poverty in Pakistan.

Re: More money for Pakistan

**TheRealDeal: **I could not understand why you are so worried about theft and embezzlement of Pakistani wealth, even now? Do you not know that big choors (thief, thug, embezzlers) of Pakistan, also known as BaiNazeer Bhutto, her corrupt husband Zardari and her competitor in corruption, Nawaz Shareef, are all out of country? If they are out, why you so worried?

It seems, people ruling Pakistan at present are honest, those who think about Pakistan first and not about their own pocket and Swiss account first. Time is gone when Kanglay choor leaders like BB, Zardari and NS became mega rich by stealing money belonging to Pakistani poor.

*

You should remember few things and you would not worry.

In 1988, when BB became prime minister, Pakistan overall external debt was around 13 billion dollars plus internal debt (debt in local currency) of around 300 billion rupees. After conversion, it was an overall debt of around 28 billion dollar when Pakistan GNP was around 35 billion dollars.

In 11 years (1988-99) of Pakistan under crooks (NS and BB), external debt increased to around 38 billion dollars and on top of that, internal debt increased to around 1700 billion rupees. Thus, after conversion, overall debt of Pakistan increased to 75 to 80 billion dollars when Pakistan GNP was around 63 billion dollars (by 1999). To cover external debt and obligations, Pakistan dollar reserve was around 200 to 250 million dollars.

Do you know what these crooks did with those 25 billion dollars external, and 1400 billion rupees internal debt, these thugs borrowed? They and their crook followers stole most of that, and deposited it in their Swiss, London, Parris, and New York bank accounts and bought properties all over the world.

Do you know the condition now?

In last 7 years, since Musharraf came to power, external debt came down to around 36 billion dollars though internal debt gone to 2300 billion rupees. Thus, after conversion, present overall debt of Pakistan is 74 billion dollars when Pakistan GNP is around 146 billion dollars. To cover external debt and obligations, Pakistan dollar reserve is over 12000 million dollars (or 12 billion dollars), or around 50 times more then what Nawaz left.

Is it difficult for you to think? If you can think, try to think yourself that if Musharraf would have been looting, plundering, and stealing, how Pakistan overall debt would not have increased in last 7 years, and how Pakistan reserve would have increased to over 1200 million dollars (form 200-250 million dollars in 1999)?

Looking at past trend (when thugs - BB and NS - were ruling):

By now (in 2006), Pakistan external debt should have increased to 74 billion dollars instead of present 36 billion dollars, as during thugs (BB, NS) rule, it was increasing by around 10 percent a year. [Thus, savings of around 38 billion dollars that past thugs (if they stayed in power) would have borrowed from external sources in last 7 years and than would have stolen those dollars].

By now (in 2006), Pakistan internal debt should have increased to 4800 billion rupees instead of present 2300 billion rupees, as during thugs (BB, NS) rule, it was increasing by around 16 percent a year. [Thus, savings of around 2500 billion rupees (equivalent of 40 billion dollars) that past thugs (if they stayed in power) would have borrowed from internal sources in last 7 years and than would have stolen those rupees].

If those thugs (BB and NS) would have been in power, Pakistan would have had 200 to 300 million dollars and they would have stolen all those 12 billion dollar reserves that Pakistan now has.

Thus, we should be grateful to President Musharraf that Pakistan saved at least 90 billion dollars from thug rulers of the past (BB, NS) and their cronies.

[90 billion dollars is = 38 billion dollars from extra external debt that Pakistan do not have, plus 12 billion dollars that Pakistan has in reserves that Pakistan would not have had, plus 40 billion dollars (2500 billion rupees) from extra internal debt that Pakistan do not have.

That comes to 13 billion dollars a year during last 7 years, these thugs (BB and NS) plus their cronies, would have stolen for sure (that is extra debt burden on Pakistan they would have caused because of borrowing and stealing, and by stealing all those reserves Pakistan has at present). Apart of that money, those thugs would have stolen all money that went into Pakistan development in last 7 years, as, if they would have stayed, what developments Pakistan has seen in last 7 years, would have been nil, and whatever money spent on developments would have gone stolen too.

If you do not believe the above quoted figures related to Pakistan GNP in current dollars, Pakistan external dollars debt, Pakistan internal rupees debt, and Pakistan dollar reserves, write to the state bank of Pakistan, statistical department of Pakistan, or search yourself for data from any reliable source, corresponding to the year 1988, 1999 and 2006].*

Re: More money for Pakistan

your kidding yourself, look alone how much debt relief Pakistan has had since 9/11 before you 'brag' about debt going down.

As for forex, again look at the effect of 9/11.

You think a dictator that chooses to put types like Chaudry Shujaat in charge is running a clean govt?!

It is precisely because the same corruption is continuing that those concerned about my country our worried, we choose not to stick our head in the sands.

Re: More money for Pakistan

Care to elaborate on how they got out, esp Nawaz Sharif? was he an innocent when he left Pakistan?

Re: More money for Pakistan

line of debt relief and aid numbers with the numbers sa1eem has posted already and see for yourself how they make just a fraction of the total impact.
