Total disarmament of the city is the only solution. Completely disarm the MQM and the ANP workers and then impose curfews in residential areas, and beef up security in the commercial ones (no pillion riding either). Shoot to kill if an armed suspect is found.

That won't do any good in the long run...unless nine zero is raided and altaf's ancestoral home, the future site of mazar of hazrat pir daata altaf hussain shah sahab ghazali qadri naqshbandi rayban kay chashmali, is not demolished and all MQM upper cadre executed or jailed for life...

Unfortunately Karachi is not an isolated city so simply disarming MQM is not going to do it, arms suppliers all around Pakistan will not sit idle. Once "cleanup" is performed arms will again be dumped from all over the country. Pakistan has long way to go to curb this issue, first thing is we need to decide whether we want to enforce law or not.

Practicality is a relative thing and aqal is courtesy of providence, please consult whatever god(s) you believe in to acquire some of that aqal...Having said that, this ostensibly impractical solution was apparently all too practical for PPP/Naseerullah Babar in the early nineties to things along these lines...too bad they didn't go all the way...and too bad Mush allowed the rats to come out their hellhole and gave them the free reign to do what they do best, terrorize the citizens of Karachi...
Plus, It's an option which is lot more practical then the impractical war of attrition being fought in Tribal Areas to keep Kayani and Zardari's bosses sitting at Langley happy...

The whole clean up could have negative repercussions as well. Only fuel the anti-sentiment in areas of Karachi and give them more reasons to stick together and develop "counter-insurgency".
Curfews are needed as well as timing to when shops can remain open and certain areas where everyone can go through checking. Its not gonna be rosy but hey it will be a start.

^oh really? you do realize how many innocent people are going to suffer because of that genius idea!. There was a time when they coulda/shoulda done the operation and things may have been a little calmer, its too late for that now.
Do you know exactly what the immediate impact will be? how much more violence? how many more deaths?
The only way (as much as it sounds like fantasy) is the the parties be booted out. Let the system run, democratically-whatever definition that is in pakistani society. Even the security establishment is weak to carry on its duties and safeguards interests of the street folk. Its just horrible the way things are there.

I know that MQM has a history of claiming every unidentified dead body as their KAARKUN .. but their workers are getting killed too. Eliminating MQM headquarter is not oing to end the ghunda gardi in Karachi, it will just shift the power to other parties.
Jamiat, ANP, PPP .. all are notorious and known for their ghunda gardi in Karachi from the times before MQM was even born.

So this argument is trite and farcical to say the least...nobody comes close to ghoonda gardi, terrorism and harassment of ordinary citizens...not even TTP...

conspiracy or no conspiracy persons involved in such heinous crimes are easily bought and used for what ever agenda they'r given, are real people, mostly from poor backgrounds on vengeance for self or others for fistful of money.
Usually they are deprived of the basic amenities of life in Pakistan hence have no where else to turn to.

Unidentified gunmen have killed more people in Karachi this year than TTP in the whole country... how unfortunate and sad. and yet our govt and its coalition partners do not find enough of reasons to conduct a fierce action and clean the mess. we were sooo quick in starting army action in swat after seeing that fake girl flogging view, and in lal masjid after abduct + release of a prostitute. but when it comes to karachi we are numb, and hypocrite, only because people involved here are part of the govt, and they call themselves "liberal".
I bet if there were any muslim-look-alike-party-names claiming these killings, by now we all would have been justifying how bombing the city is eligible, and why all the relatives of those "extremists" including women and children, deserve to die. by no means i'm saying we should bomb Karachi, its my city, they are my people, my family friends all... but it looks like what goes around, comes around
