If you are agitated and irritable and can?t really blame your boss, spouse, colleague or client for it, maybe it?s time to take a look at your eating habits. Your diet can affect the way you think and feel in at least two distinct ways. One is by influencing the chemical messengers in your brain and secondly through its effect on your blood sugar level. *

If you are agitated and irritable and can’t really blame your boss, spouse, colleague or client for it, maybe it’s time to take a look at your eating habits. Your diet can affect the way you think and feel in at least two distinct ways. One is by influencing the chemical messengers in your brain and secondly through its effect on your blood sugar level. So let’s take a look at the kind of food that can keep you in a good mood.
The Right Breakfast

http://www.healthcaremagic.com/article/images/img01.jpG

A good breakfast is the key to keeping you in a good mood throughout the day. The mood enhancing breakfast should have the right carbohydrates such as whole wheat breads and breakfast cereals. Broken wheat (daliya) is an easily available whole grain. Whole grains are important because they are absorbed slowly and keep your blood sugar levels stable. Swinging blood sugar is a common cause of irritability. In addition, carbohydrates boost the supply of tryptophan in the brain, which in turn boosts serotonin synthesis.

**Plenty of Water **

Another common cause of irritability and fatigue is dehydration. Keep a bottle of water handy and make sure that you drink water at regular intervals. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are not substitutes for water. However, munching on some fruits such as apples and oranges can help you stay better hydrated.

**Green Leafy Vegetables **

Leafy greens are good sources of folate. Folate deficiency has been linked with depression in some studies. You can ensure that your diet is not folate deficient by regularly consuming some spinach, lettuce, and other leafy greens. Nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts) and legumes (all daals and peas) are also a good source of folate.
Fish and Walnuts

The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are endless! You know that they are good for your heart and your arteries. Now scientists have found that they also influence metabolic pathways in your brain and can combat depression. Given all the benefits of omega-3s, it makes perfect sense to include some rich sources such as fish and walnuts in your diet.
**Lean Meats **

Lean meats such as chicken, pork and beef provide an amino acid called tyrosine. Tyrosine boosts the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, brain messengers that can help you feel more alert and focused. Meats also provide vitamin B12, which fights insomnia and depression.
Dark Chocolate

Now we all know that this one is a quick and utterly desirable mood booster. It provides two chemicals, caffeine and theobromine that have a mood enhancing effect. Have the darkest variety of chocolate that you can find for maximum benefit.

Baked or Mashed Potato

Baked or mashed potato can be a quick fix for a foul mood because it causes the release of serotonin in your brain. However, fried potato chips do not have the same effect because of the accompanying fat.
Seafood

Seafood such as oysters, sardines, clams, crab and fish produce a mood enhancing effect by supplying plenty of selenium. Selenium has been shown to have an antidepressant effect in research studies. Thankfully, many of the other healthy foods such as nuts, legumes, and whole grains are also good sources of selenium.

Re: Mood Enhancing foods..........

i think for me chocolate is the only guilty pleasure(but definitely not a mood enhancer b/c i can't just eat one, i would be tempted to eat the whole box, so that's why i stay away from the chocolate aisle in the store). when it comes to chocolate i don't have the self control to resist it.

have you tried the russell stovers sugar free chocolates, that's the only stuff i buy and feel guilt free about, although they still have 160 calories and 10 grams of fat in 3 pieces, sux :(

Help your mood and escape the sugar trap with our healthy snack ideas!

     **The sugar trap**
Even with the best of intentions, it’s easy to overindulge. Maybe a client left a tin of sweets for you in the office, and you can’t resist dipping in every time you walk by. Or a workmate brings in chocolate éclairs because it’s her birthday.
Maybe you didn’t have time for breakfast, and you grab a chocolate bar from the shop at coffee time because you’re starving. But did you know chocolate and sweets can have an adverse effect on your mood?

A bit of what you fancy**
There’s a direct link between eating high-sugar snacks and energy slumps. That chocolate bar will give you a ‘sugar high’ for a short time – but after a while, blood sugar levels can drop, leaving you tired, irritable and feeling low. If your blood sugar keeps fluctuating, it can also interfere with your stress levels.

       **Healthy alternatives**
Try these healthy but delicious snacks in place of your usual sugary treats, and see the benefits to your mood – and your waistline!
  1. A banana gives you a sustained energy boost and is packed with vitamins and mood-boosting tryptophan to keep you feeling good for longer.

  2. Dip a carrot or other crudités into a tub of dip, like low-fat houmous.

  3. An apple and a handful of nuts is a nutritionally balanced snack and fills you up between meals.

  4. If you can’t resist sweet things, try mango – it’s sweet but nutritious, making it an ideal snack. You can even buy it in packs at the supermarket ready-sliced.

  5. Blueberries are a so-called ‘superfood’ – low in sugar and high in anti-oxidants, try them mixed with low fat yoghurt for a tasty snack.

Try a couple of spoonfuls of guacamole on rye crispbread or oatcakes – so much better for you than a chocolate bar!

Thanks for sharing this info Nisha :k:

Re: Mood Enhancing foods..........

I used to have that ready sliced mango all the time. Nothing beats traditional Pakistani mangoes though.

Re: Mood Enhancing foods…

you’re welcome :hugz:

mangoes have only 106 calories and 0 grams of fat. i wish it was mango season here now, they aren’t as good as the ones there, but good enough to satisfy that mango craving.

**hash brownies **

Re: Mood Enhancing foods…

oh yea, hash browns with eggs in the morning are the best too :yummy:. but still they are only a once in a while treat for me personally, not very healthy:bummer: unless you eat the baked version of it, do you :konfused:

Re: Mood Enhancing foods…

Oh its mango season. I am literally bursting with mangoes. Every day I eat some and also have fresh juice. It is the taste of love

Tip: In case you are overdoing it with mangoes, sprinkle a pinch of ginger powder in your juice or over the mango slices to counter the effects.
