I have these monthly meetings with my mentor at work where we discuss the current events and my career goals.We have already discussed our experience in our respective organizations within our company. I have also discussed some of my short term goals with her.
I am actually running out of topics to discuss with her now, any suggestions?
My mentor is currently a Manager in Accounting and I am a Financial Analyst in the Finance department.
Also- any tips on NOT turning our casual meetings into formal interviews? I tend to get nervous and start giving long pauses or ramble on.
Did you guys create a mentoring plan? Duration of the whole program, goals for both, frequency and duration of each meeting. That would be the way to go. You have to get something out of it, and vice versa. It appears you are not right now. Could be wrong mentor, could be that the relationship has run its course and now you need a different mentor, or need to set goals with this one
Hi- Thanks for the response. Yeah it seems like we are meeting too frequently, and we did set goals but since we are meeting so frequently, I feel that we have ran out of things to talk about.… I will try to adjust the timings and frequency of our meetings. Thanks for your input :)
In some organizations, the mentoring is not structured yo the extent you describe it. Monthly meetings (I assume one hour) is a bit much. Maybe the meeting can be in a casual atmosphere. Say over lunch. Or a mid day walk. Or even a brief after work visit to Annachee's tea Kadai.
Maybe you could entertain the possibility of mentoring someone. And look to her for either provifing you with a mentee or pointers re mentoring.
You could also do a small project with her. Such as analyzing securities. Using her expertise in accounting. (And maybe post some sample case studies here)
