Monopolizing the Conversation

Personally, I enjoy sitting back and listening to conversations around me - I’m a people-observer by choice. But today I was invited to lunch for the specific reason that, while being a keen people watcher, when the need arises, I’m pretty chatty and can discuss anything - mundane, interesting, thought-provoking or inane - whatever strikes anyone’s fancy.

I think I’m doing a good deed by keeping the conversation moving - I hate those silent pauses when people think “now what can we talk about?” but really, am I monopolizing the conversation instead?

Re: Monopolizing the Conversation

as long as you're including others or they are umming ar-ing at the right time no...but if they're not interested or responding then maybe...

Re: Monopolizing the Conversation

Conversation monopoly is usually when the convo is mostly - if not all - about you and your opinions and your thoughts.

When its a little bit of everybody and you are just helping to facilitate or move the convo along...its different.

I would prefer to have lunch that way versus being quiet or awkward. You're doing well!!!

Re: Monopolizing the Conversation

If I am comfortable with the person, I don't find silences awkward. If someone is trying too hard to keep convos going, I find the super annoying. I like it when conversations flow naturally and don't mind it, even if there are silences.

Re: Monopolizing the Conversation

I think its an art to keep the conversation going . One have to be creative about it to keep other person interested .

Re: Monopolizing the Conversation

OR...

ask a woman something about herself. Set alarm for 20 minutes.

Repeat

Re: Monopolizing the Conversation

^Ask her about other women such as MIL, co-worker or where does she do such a great shopping etc.

Set the clock for three hours...................So she can take a big breath. :)

Anyhow, there are people who have good art of keepng the conversation going.
All it takes is a good company.
