Salaam all. I am on Rogers, have a 120 GB monthly package which is now turning out to be insufficient for everyone at home. I have about 8 devices at home, including all laptops, desktops and phones. When i ask people no one admits to using the internet so much :hehe: but fact is 7 days into the month half the b/w has already been used up.
Need recommendations on b/w throttling, monitoring solutions. I found out about something called Tomato Firmware Tomato Firmware | polarcloud.com but it’s not available for my cable modem. The cable modem i have is a Hiltron CGN2.
get a cheap linksys wifi router that is compatible with tomato or any other trustworthy openWRT-like firmwares - the 11n ones might not be compatible though, might have to get an 11a/b/g router. use this router for all your wifi needs, and not the cable-modem directly.
Now down to bijnis you can use the Rogers portal to monitor what ur using. Besides that at home you need a central location if you're going to monitor multiple devices. If it was a single computer you can install from a barrage of various software utilities. But for multiple devices you need a router which can show you who's sucking down the juices. Its Christmas season so you should be able to find good deals on cheap routers that you can either put DD-WRT firmware on or the Tomato Firmware. That should give you the best bang for the buck. A Linksys WRT54G2 box should set you back about $30-40 and you'd be all set.
else install Bitmeter OS on all of the laptops Download Bitmeter OS | PCWorld
Phones wont be using so much bandwidth. It should be the laptops only. So by monitoring the laptops, you can find the cuplrit
It might even be some malware which has turned the laptop into a Zombie
That is a good idea, i’m sure i can find one off kijiji for cheap.
Yes tofibaba unfortunately being with Rogers bandwidth doesnt come cheap. I could be with cheaper ISPs but their customer service is close to zero and i would rather pay $ than burn brain cells on the phone with poor customer service Thanks for your advice i’ll look into getting a used linksys router.
Thanks Gizzy, downloading PRTG right now And yes very much possible that it could be malware too
i wouldn't install anything on the comps. it is just going to slow everything down. the router has a cpu with free cycles, best place to count your bits in and out.
