MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

i still think amna's example was good example nescio!!!

i (& a number of people I know) had a standard epidural and it helped alot, there r proven to be no risks involved. The people i know r all still fine!.

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

Amana and meeni: Did you take it at 6cm or 8cm dilation? Also did you take demerol to relax the pain ?

I think I am changing my mind and going to take standard epidural.

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

it was a standard epidural where they inserted a fine pipe(with no pain!) in the lower back
and after that the natural process took place, with full dilation. (This was 4 yrs ago, so i dunno how things have changed now)

btw if u need more detailed info, feel free to pm me, its more comfortable!!

BUT I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE STANDARD EPIDURAL

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

amana and meeni and ILMB, although the epidural and total anesthesia aren't comparable, they come closer to each other than your example of tooth extraction.

Secondly, I wouldn't want someone to stick a needle in my spinal canal with the potential hazards of infection, bleeding and severing of nerves plus weakness of uterine contractions and the expulsion. Certainly not run this risk a priori. As I said, I'd only go for an epidural if the indication was there (e.g. fatigue), but certainly not take it in advance. Why run this risk, when there is a very much higher chance that the birth will be normal one, also with respect to pain and duration?

Re: MOMs once again “BIRTHPLAN”.

did you take demerol to relax the pain ?

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

.....just reading comments about the head flattening debate....

I think it's more about giving your child a rounded head rather than a pointy one. You can get special baby pillows that will help create a more rounded head shape.

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

Hey listen...about epidurals. I am abnormally terrified of needles but just the thought of someone sticking a large gauge needle in my spinal column gives me hives. I went thru 3 births, 2 of them with pitocin (which makes labor pains WAY more intense) and I got thru it. I had a half-dose of Nubain with the 2 pitocin births. Nubain is as safe as demerol but doesnt make you feel sick like demerol does. It was only a half-dose cause you get half in the IV line and half in an injection in your hip...I refused the hip stick. Needles are worse than birth pains lol!

These birth plans really go flying right out the window...I worked on one with my first. He was born 20 minutes after we arrived at the hospital. Since hospitals are so eager to stick needles in your spine, I really waited too long out of fear. So the birth plan turned into "hey, here he comes, catch!!"

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

ILOVEMYBABY: no i didnt take that

Mamaof3: setting up an epidural does not hurt, because the medicine is administered only when the pain begins to start (and we women all know that theres nothing worse then that kinda pain). its a thin pipe (almost the size of an injection needle and when the nurse injected me and set me up , i said "havnt u started yet"!!!!!!!!!!!!

NESCIO: i agree with u all these kinda things might have bad effects but so r things like crossing the road!

i read alot about that before i tried it, and asked other people too so i knew it was safe

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

ILOVEMYBABY: I didn't take demoral, just had the epidural - I am terrified of needles but didn't mind it. I didn't feel much of anything - I had a pitocin drip due to labor not progressing and the contractions were awful

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

By the way, make sure that you or your husband clearly remind the nurses on duty that you requested females only, and remind them again during shift changes. When I was giving birth to my 4th, a male nurse kept coming in to take my vitals during the later stages of labor - i was not feeling polite at that point in time!

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

You shouldn't take demoral because anything systemic like that is transfered to the baby.

An epidural is not a systemic drug and it was a lifesafer after so many hours of labor.

I went into transition with my son (my first) midnight the night before and by 5am was begging for anything with no baby in sight. By 7 they gave it to me and it was the first time since midnight I was able to get a real break. I felt the pressure, I could push, slight pain, but no major labor. Had him at 9am.

I always said completely natural, no drugs, but transition changed my mind to that. I am petrified by anything sharp so near to me spinal cord, but after labor every minute for so many hours, forget it. Paralyze me, please.

Later I was amazed I agreed to it, but you really have to be in that situation.

Re: MOMs once again "BIRTHPLAN".

Ok, so I guess we are looking forward to lots of pain before taking the epidural for our upcoming deliveries. I haven't been scared of labor ever since but looks like it's going to be more difficult than I had imagined...

Re: MOMs once again “BIRTHPLAN”.

Thanks for the reminder. I will make sure.
