An Oklahoma mom tried to sell her two children for $4,000 so she could pay her boyfriend’s bail, police have said. Misty VanHorn, 22, is accused of offering up her babies — one who is 2 years old and the other just 10 months — via Facebook.
The mom of two allegedly contacted a woman in Fort Smith, Ark., through the social network site. Her oldest child was worth $1,000, or the “customer” could have both children for $4,000.
The woman, concerned about the safety of the youngsters, contacted Oklahoma Department of Human Services, who in turn notified Sallisaw Police. VanHorn was arrested on suspicion of trafficking children and is now being held in Sequoyah County Jail on $40,000 bond. The state has taken custody of the children.
what a freaking psycho!!! what is wrong with some women…honestly some of them these days just deserve what ever that happens to them for all the crap that they pull!!!
How can you even have an ounce of respect for women like these!!!
She is the one who should be sold…sold to the worst scum on the earth!
How is this situation different from folks who adopt kids from agencies of suspect reputation? Other than the fact the latter are well off?
PS she did not just contact “a woman”. This woman was her acquaintance. Per huffington post.
We lock people up for stupid reasons. While big bankers are too big to be jailed. She was not trafficking her children for sex. She needed money. She also could nit care for them. So offered them to an acquaintance, nit a stranger.
Dig under the hood a little.
She was desperate to raise money to get her bf out of jail. She went door to door to raise money. Couldn’t get money. Desperate situation.
Rich folks post bail. Poor folks are faced with poor choices. Stop locking people up for minor offences. That would be a start
Don’t care what her situation is, selling ur kids is not a minor offence, mothers normally sell themselves if they need money..not the kids..and she was bargaining…if it was so difficult for her, she could give them up for adoption, not sell them for her stupid boyfriend!
Don’t need to dig under the hood to feel outraged, any sane MOTHER would feel outraged at what she was trying to do.
In arranged marriages, people carry out financial transactions all the time. When folks from the west go to adopt kids from third world countries, they pay off the poor parents. This lady simply handled the financial details herself. She was not trafficking her children. Definition of that is when parents sell their daughters to prostitution houses. One can say she was arranging for her adoption her own way.
We need to look ar root causes. Why we throw people in jailnfor ridiculous reasons. And how a vicious circle starts once the imprisonment begins. How the income inequalities may drive people to do irrational things.
Anyway, this is how I feel abt this. Not a popular position. Oh well.
And what is the benefit of throwing her in jail? That just digs the hole deeper. We as a society are too quick to judge. Maybe she does not feel the connection with her kids. And decided under her current (and not so bright future) circumstances, the kids are better off with her acquaintance, who clearly is in a better place.
Those who abort children - are they better than this woman? Those who are pro life and dictate to women what to do with their body. Are they better? Those who want to preserve tax cuts for the rich while keeping min wage unchanged and gutting welfare Medicaid. Are they any better? Proponents of 3 strikes and you are out law? Are they any better?
The last two categories are closely intertwined with this lady. Because such policies make situations of folks such as her hopeless.
Child labor. Used to be quite common in sub continent. And probably still is.
Taking advantage of undocumented workers - their children suffer
buying an IPHONE. Working conditions abyssmal.
Buying products just based on cost - low cost products made in countries with poor laborious laws.
Abusing environment - poor folks ( and their kids) suffer most.
So let us take care of the poor and their kids who are here. And not thumb our noses at the actions of the poor. The actions being the symptom. Our callousness being the root cause.
depends if they have met abusers, if they have met the ones who were abused, and if they have had any experiences with perpetrators…if they have, it is not that difficult to wish the same on the perpetrators or worse!
In the Chris Hayes show today, it was stated that 17% of Iraqis lived in slums circa 2002. Now? 54%. With poverty comes bad choices. Root problem? Unnecessary wars. Symptoms: poor choices.
It is easy to focus on poor choices. Addressing root cause takes too much effort.
This woman/ young adult is described as 21 or 22 yrs old depending on the site. So she had her 1st child st 19 or 20 yrs. Now how mature could she have been?
She and/ or her bf appear to have drug problems. No site discusses why bf jailed. All we know it is a bailable offence. So must have been for petty crime. Brings usxback to if locking up people is solution.
Take info Pak. Folks argue endlessley which side more brutal. Big picture? Jawans on both sides and their families victims. Upity defence personnel live comfortably. Jawans pawns.
Address poverty and inequality. Then watch these incidents decrease in frequency. Did I say this requires work?
I was watching the great Bill Moyer’s show. Guest was a person speaking about climate change. He quoted Benjamin Franklin “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
It occurred to me that the same is applicable to this and similar issues. Here the ounce of prevention is better policies wrt elimination of inequities. Unfortunately and predictably, we are resorting to a pound of cure - throwing the mom and bf in jail.
Yeah trying to sell your offspring online for quick cash isn’t great parenting but where did the abuse get in the picture? I think Southie (uncle?) is onto something, mother is suffering from mental and psychological ailments and is in need of professional help. Her kids are not under her care any longer and in an ironic way, maybe jail and prison time will get her the help that she otherwise couldn’t get.
