but why are we surprised. For over 40 years our establishment conducted proxy wars in india and Afghanistan via these monsters and kept on portraying these animals as mujahidin who are doing jihad against zalim india, usa, israel and russia. Public started to believe in that narrative wholeheartedly and now we want to change that image overnight...that ain't gonna happen.

It's not just about sympathizers. Lal masjid has more ammo than a military outpost in FATA. Who is providing them funding? There is government support for this SOB and his croonies. And this is where the military is now in a difficult position. The very goons they were supporting for terrorism in other countries to fight their proxy war - free blood from brainwashed villagers promised heavens for their hatred - are now killing their kids in school massacres that are on par with boko haram's little girl kidnappings in Africa.
This is what happens when Islam is perverted. Any religion gets turned into a war machine for personal benefit for a small elite class, or national interest, etc, instead of using the military and diplomacy and keeping good neighborly relations, etc --> you will see this militancy.
What is very sad is that Pakistan seems to be the birthplace of this going back to the 70's. In a way, now I can see American foreign policymakers being correct - Pakistan was playing a double game this whole time. And now it's citizens are gonna pay. Spot on PCG...and I have been saying this for a very long time but when you point out self destructive policies of our establishment, you are labeled as a pro-USA or pro-indian.
tell you what, this country Pakistan was one hell of a country in 50s, 60s and 70s...how i wish i was born and raised in that Pakistan. the country where our parents grew up was totally different. We were tolerant fun people...we had bars, mosques, beaches, dance parties, ramazan, movies, music, religious congregations, muharram, 12th rabi ul awal, everything side by side with no problem. Everyone was leading his own life. Bloody mullahs were there but they were put in place both by govt and common people. There only job was to conduct nikah ceremonies and read funeral prayers.
and then zia ul haq came and destroyed the fabric of our society by radicalizing it to its core. Syllabus changed, agencies got politicized, proxy wars started , and we became champion of muslim ummah sending "muhaudidin" everywhere. rest is history.
You are right that today sab ko chaska laga howa sharia ka but if sahria came all of them will run away...

Definently, those days were much better.
Not only for Pak but for the region as a whole. A Pathan friend of ours from Peshawar used to tell us about how he would go to Kabul with friends to watch movies. Kabul then was like Europe it was so liberal and laid back.
There were tensions, religious and secterian etc, but it was fringe at that time. Most people just let it be.
The pseudo-Islamic makeover of the country has only made people miserable. And yet the right wing will tell you its because we arent Islamic enough that causes all the problems! The conservative right in every country seems too have lost higher brain function.

Just like people and govt put mullahs in their place so they only had a role in reading nikkahs and funerals, likewise that can happen again. It happened back then because mullahs were not armed. Take away their arms and let the mob lunch then and you'll see. They'll get marginalized super fast and to keep their kappra roti they will keep quiet. That's how it was before. From what I understand the lal masjid brothers were poor kids from a poor household that no one knew about. Radio mullah likewise was some cable operator for tourists. At that point gori ladies with make up and no hijabs were probably not a problem for him.

Pakistan was never run and controlled by religious people.
People cry and moan about Zia. Many came after him and did nothing meaningful for the country. Those are/were so called secular and irreligious.
