Asif hearing deferred to Sunday

June 5, 2008
**Mohammad Asif’s ordeal in Dubai will continue for at least a few more days, after his hearing today was deferred to Sunday. **
Asif has been in detention at Dubai International Airport since Sunday after authorities allegedly found a banned substance in his wallet. He made a statement today in front of the chief prosecutor though still no charges have been laid against him.
“The hearing has been deferred till Sunday,” Shafqat Naghmi, PCB’s chief operating officer, told Cricinfo. “Friday and Saturday are weekends there, but Asif recorded his statement today. No charges have yet been laid against him.”
**Sources close to the case confirmed to Cricinfo that the substance found in his wallet was a banned, recreational drug, though the urine tests conducted on Asif have come back negative. **
The PCB, it is learnt, is still working through diplomatic channels to have the case resolved as soon as possible, though no Pakistani government official has yet become involved in the matter.

Few more days for Mr Asif in Dubai to spend.

He is not spending them in the City of Dubai, he is detained at the Dubai Airport.

It is still Dubai. May be they have detained the joker in the VIP lounge.

With the $650,000 3yr deal he has with IPL, he can afford to visit Dubai on his own and even stay at the Burj Al Arab suite. But that's not the focus here. The guy has embarassed and brought shame on our country and cricket. We have PCB administration & Shoaib Akhtar doing a good job of that already, we dont need more people joining the party.

Not for the first time, he got away with it previously along with his best made Actor.
**Charsi* kaheen ka.* He has earned himself a new nick for sure. His teammates/crowds won't let him live it down for the rest of his playing life. Now everytime he misfields or drops a dolly he might hear shouts of charsi or something similar.

Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai! - Charges Dropped [Merged]
To be devil’s advocate here, Dubai has pretty stupid drug laws, and is in general one of the more idiotic police states in the world.
on the one hand you have prostitution and alcohol pretty much in the open and the other intrusive drug laws that can very often screw unsuspecting people. you go to a place like Saudia and you know beforehand not to take anything for granted, inspect whether or not its possible to get high from the material of your sweater for example. You know they’re religious nutjobs who will behead you for wearing a hemp shirt.
Dubai, with its liberal laws and amoral society, you dont really expect to behave this way.
here is an example of Dubai’s crazy laws and police. Asif could very well have been carrying something ostensibly harmless that normal people wouldnt give a second thought about. Ofcourse he could be guilty but I’d rather reserve judgement, knowing how silly arab laws and police are.
From the above article:
It isnt just about hakeem dawai, a lot of painkillers/health supplements that are perfectly legal anywhere else get you arrested. They are basically crazy hypocritical nutjobs.
Very well said.
Just to add my two cents, the stupid laws of this most modern society are not limited to drugs only.
double post.

One full week in detention in Dubai. Some sheikh must be having his way with him.
Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai! - Charges Dropped [Merged]
knowing dubai one should be on the lookout for an anomalously tall camel jockey with floppy hair
Re: Mohammad Asif Arrested in Dubai! - Charges Dropped [Merged]
I know of a person who was jailed for 4 years for bringing "khashkhash" to dubai for cooking purpose.
Any News yet on Asif's fate? Its 1:44pm Sunday Dubai time.

Fast bowler Asif’s case referred to Dubai’s attorney general
LAHORE: The case involving Pakistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who has been detained in Dubai for possession of an illegal substance, has been referred to the attorney general. Asif appeared before the public prosecutor on Sunday and the hearing was adjourned soon after the recommendations of the prosecutor were heard. The investigation into the matter has been completed, and the attorney general is expected to take up the case either on Monday (today) or on Tuesday (tomorrow). On the other hand, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is running from pillar to post to save the bowler from being prosecuted in Dubai.
“The public prosecutor has completed his proceedings in today’s hearing,” Mansoor Suhail, the PCB media director, said on Sunday. “He has provided his report to the attorney general and he will take further action on Monday,” he added. Detained since last Sunday, Asif also faces a dicey situation at home as pressure is mounting on the PCB to take action against him for getting involved in a drug scandal that has again brought a bad name to Pakistan cricket.
Nadeem Akram, the PCB official overlooking the case in Dubai, is hoping a decision will be made on Monday. “The chief prosecutor cross-examined the witnesses who were instrumental in finding the banned substance from the bowler,” he told media in Dubai. He said he had met Asif and found him to be in ‘high spirits’. “I met Asif as he needed some money and he was still in high spirits as he is innocent,” added Akram. If convicted, Asif could face a sentence of up to four years. Asif was banned for one year after he tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in October 2006. Fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years on the same charge. The bans were however lifted on appeal two months later. Akhtar meanwhile is appealing a lifetime ban imposed in April for repeated disciplinary problems.
