Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan fast bowler, has returned home nearly a month after being released from jail in Dorset, where he had served half of a six-month sentence for his part in a spot-fixing scam.
He landed at Lahore’s Alama Iqbal International Airport around 4.45am on Sunday and left through a side exit to evade the media. Amir was accompanied by his solicitor Sajida Malik and was received by his father and his brother. They drove back to his family bungalow in Lahore’s Defence Housing Authority area.
“He made a mistake and he admitted it,” Amir’s mentor, Asif Bajwa, told ESPNcricinfo. "He is a strong young boy and knows how to withstand pressure both in cricket and in life, so I believe he definitely will return.
“Now what required is his image building. He has already served his term being imprisoned in London. We have hired a solicitor from London who will provide us legal aid and we will decide whether to appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport or not.”
Amir and two of his team-mates, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, were sentenced in November 2011 at Southwark Crown Court of conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat at gambling after a plot was uncovered in a News of the Worldsting operation to bowl deliberate no-balls in a Test against England in 2010.
In February 2011, an ICC tribunal had also banned Amir for five years from playing any level of cricket in the world.
The Pakistan board is keen to talk to Amir about his future and Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, has hinted that Amir will be welcomed to Pakistan cricket once he served his ban.
“Obviously someone has to sit with him and listen to his part of the story,” Wasim Bari, the PCB’s Director of Training and Education, told ESPNcricinfo. “I have no directive about any plan from the PCB for Amir but I read about the chairman’s willingness to allow Amir back once he has served his ban. I don’t know what his plan for the future is but if he needs any rehabilitation we definitely will provide him [with it].”
The PCB has not made any official contact with the cricketer since his ban but has kept track of the spot-fixing case. It has said it won’t provide any legal cover to the cricketer but could provide Amir anti-corruption lectures and educational lectures.
“Obviously we will be meeting him to find out the root cause of the spot-fixing issue in Pakistan cricket,” PCB chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmad, said. “We will talk to him to find out how and why he got involved in this corruption. Initially he was not very honest with us so we need to ask him questions. We also want to discuss his rehabilitation with him.”

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

Finally. He should be rehabilitated slowly. If PCB want to invest in him (which it should), PCB should take care of his general education (and education related to corruption).

Personally, I think PCB (or he himself) should not rush and there should be around a year long cooling and rehabilitation period before efforts are made to get the ban lifted.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

I read tasawal rizwi said Amir will be punished by PCB too

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

he seemed so promising i felt so sad when heard about this corruption :(

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

May be because he didn’t share his ‘earning’ with Butta.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

fine?

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

He is not the only talent Pakistan has. Look for someone who is good investment and not corrupted. How difficult it is to find some talent out of a pool of 180 million Pakistani population ?

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

^ So there should be no options as rehabilitation? even if person has done his time? in other words life sentence for everything eh?

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

He can go and do many other things with his life he has many options to become a model citizen again but being but being a hero or role model for our kids is not one of them. Our kids will thinks it is OK to cheat and lie for once. Once you go to jail for what you did you can come back and regain your position in society and you can be a hero and role model. People will forget everything and start worshiping you again.
There should be a differentiation between those who live their lives as per rules and those who chose to break the rules.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

Last time I checked Shane Warne is still hero in Aus even though he was penalized for 1 year and was also fined for corruption charges.

I believe on giving one chance specially to non-serial criminal. If someone is showing remorse and is willing to work for the cause in future with all their stardom. Sometimes, a 'turned around' personality (from bad to good) is better role model for kids. I believe such people deserve 2nd chance.

lets agree to disagree :)

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

Many things which are norm in one society are considered taboo in ours. And many other things which are norm in ours are taboo for them. I agree to disagree.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

How many Wasim Imran Waqar and Amir have we produced in 64 years, less than 10. It is not that easy. He is young and accepted his mistake and did his time. He should be rehabilitated.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

The kind of system we have for identifying , recognizing and encouraging the talent we should be thankful to Allah that we were able to see even 10 Wasim, Imran and Waqar etc.
We have nepotism infested corrupt system of selection in any field of endeavor in our country. If we have the right kind of system of identifying, encouraging and growing talent we would see tons of Wasim , Iran and Waqar. :
Zara num ho toh yeh matti bari zarkhaiz hay saqi.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

Well lets correct the system than instead of taking out our frustration on Aamir.

He should be rehabilitated and only allowed to come back once ICC has lifted the ban.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

Rumors are that Amir’s lawyer did not accompany Amir to Pakistan only to help him out legally but there is a chakkar b/w them and Amir wanted her to meet his Parents.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

Amir will not appeal ICC ban
Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan fast bowler, has decided not to appeal, in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the five-year ban imposed on him by the ICC for spot-fixing during the 2010 Lord’s Test against England.

“Amir told the ICC earlier this week through his lawyer that he would not be appealing against his five-year ban,” an ICC spokesman told ESPNcricinfo.

Re: Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan

May be this will keep him grounded. He definitely need some well educated person around him to keep him on track.

Pakistan’s banned pacer, Mohammad Amir is head-over-heels in love with his lawyer Sajida Malik and both plan to get married soon, according to a report in a leading newspaper.

The report in the daily ‘Jang’ quoting sources, has said that the female lawyer who is a British citizen, has accompanied her client to Lahore so that she could meet with his parents.

“Apparently Amir fell in love with Sajida Malik when the spot-fixing scandal began in 2010 and their friendship and love has grown in the last one year,” the report claimed.

Sajida who was born in the United Kingdom but is said to be fluent in Punjabi and English, was introduced on the legal team by the Pakistan Cricket Board when the spot-fixing scandal first erupted in England.

According to the report at one time when former PCB chairman, Ijaz Butt was meeting with the legal team in London in which Amir and Sajida were also present an interesting incident took place.

The report says that Sajida took a few sips from a glass of water and put it down with her lipstick embossed on the glass.

Minutes later Amir surprised everyone when he picked up the glass and drank the remaining water despite the lipstick marks on the glass, prompting Butt to remark to one of his colleagues that it appeared the two were in love.

The report claims that though the female lawyer is a few years older than Amir, they are in love and will get married with their families consent.

Amir, 19, returned home last week after serving three months in a young offenders institution in the United Kingdom for his role in the spot-fixing scandal, but he is still under a five-year ban from the International Cricket Council.
