Moenjodaro set to disappear in 20 years

I don’t think many people would miss it, as its a non Muslim civilisation in any case.

World’s only surviving Bronze Age metropolis in Pakistan faces ruin - Telegraph

Re: Moenjodaro set to disappear in 20 years

Muslim or non-Muslim.. People just don't care of their history and heritage

Re: Moenjodaro set to disappear in 20 years

It would be a shame and a real tragedy if Mohenjodaro--the last remaining metropolis of the Bronze Age era--disappeared.

The article mentions how its preservation efforts have been hampered by lack of funding. And we have to ask ourselves why is that, why is it the case that not just Mohenjodaro but almost *all *archeological and heritage sites in Pakistan are in various stages of decay?

Of course, a major reason is that since the country and majority of its people are poor it would be be considered by many as a 'luxury' for the government to invest on these, especially when Pakistanis seem largely indifferent to their deterioration. But imagine if there were high-end hotels and a sense of security and safety then perhaps high-heeled international tourists could come visit them like millions of foreign tourists each year who visit India, and many who visit Nepal or even Bangladesh or Maldives, which has a thriving luxury tourism industy. So many forts and mansions of former princes have been restored in India, for example, and many of these former palaces have become luxury hotels. All the money and taxation revenue that that tourism generates help the economy and some of that revenue goes back into restoration and maintenance of heritage sites, which in turn help draw even more tourists.

Unfortunately, Pakistan's obsession with religion and its '*thekaydari' *coupled with the hate-hate-hate mentality of some people have made the country almost an international pariah state that many people in other countries are sick and tired of hearing about. Consequently, if they are in mood of a distinctly South Asian 'flavor' of vacation, they would must rather visit India or Nepal or Maldives or Bhutan than Pakistan. There's even a lot of global fascination with and a desire to visit places like Dubai even though minus the beaches, these are just mostly man-made mirages in the deserts with hardly an ounce of historical heritage that Pakistan can boast of. But while, unlike Pakistan, they can't lay claim to the Gandahara civilization or the Indus Valley civilization or boast of some of the tallest peaks and some stunning sceneries, places like Dubai are nonethless very peaceful, comfortable, welcoming, and accommodating destinations for international tourists. And because they seem to follow a more 'live and let live' philosophy, they don't have the kind of haters and extremists roaming around that give Pakistan its bad image. A bad image that costs Pakistan, among other things, loss of significant tourism revenue and the possible restoration and maintenance of some of its heritage sites.

^ well said.

Re: Moenjodaro set to disappear in 20 years

The other day maybe Calysodc or Southie pointed out in Gandhara civilization thread pointed out why the heads of the statues were missing. I think the answer lies in the following tweet.

Raza Rumi ‏@Razarumi](https://twitter.com/Razarumi)12h
I have seen hundreds of precious Buddha carvings mutilated by zelaots; heads chopped. Even taxila](https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Taxila&src=hash) museum has such remains. #Gandhara](https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Gandhara&src=hash) pak](https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Pak&src=hash)

This is sad

Re: Moenjodaro set to disappear in 20 years

In Moen Jo Daro's case their is no religious bigotry involved. Its simply mismanagement and inefficiency of archeology department and relevant ministry which bring the place into this condition. 2010 floods affected many archeological places in Sindh (which people don't know much about) and government simply failed to preserve those places.

Budhha might have been chop headed in Taxila, but head of Moen Jo Daro's priest and the dancing girl are not executed :D
