modesty in the eyes of islam

modesty plays a vital role in character building. it restrains a man from behaving in an undesirable manner. it acts as a shield against immoralities. it holds key to piety. Holy prophet(P.B.U.H) said" every religion has a distinctive quality and distinctive quality of islam is modesty".
this hadis shows that in every faith some particular aspect of moral behaviour recieves importance and an extraordinary emphasis is laid on it. the word modesty in common use signifies that a man should abstain from indecent acts however in hadis and quran it is used in a wider range and in islam it stands for a feeling which is intolerant of everything that is not desirable or produces disgust in a person. faith and modesty are realted very well to each other. its like if one of them goes out the other one is ready to follow soon. the rule of modesty is for both men and women to lower their gaze and not stare at each other. modesty is not to be observed only in realtion to human beings. the almighty creator comes first.

Very meaningful post, thank you. I agree 100%. This one good quality that helps us adopt many (or all) other good qualities that are universal.

We have people with different beliefs, trying to convince others how what they believe is right (I am not excluding my self). Many times what stops one from accepting the truth is ones arrogance. It hurts ones ego to accept guidance from someone who might hold a different belief. I think if one adopts modesty (and humbleness), it paves the way in identifying and ultimately adopting the true path. To me, this sounds like something that we can all adopt and agree upon. With ego out of the way, our vision will be much clearer.

I echo what Trooper said. Also, when a human being prays to GOD he should experience humbleness; in other words, everytime you pray you should feel the touch of humility and be more humble.
