What does it mean when people say she is very modern or this family is very modern.
what characteristics make one “modern”. I have observed that people mostly use it in negative way.

Many people use conservative in a negative sense also, being judgemental is never a good thing

Being extremely modern is not a good thing and being extremely conservative is also not a good thing.
See what these two have in common? The word extreme.

modern is subjective and relative term… our society measure it from appearance …
taking burqa vs taking dupatta on head… dupatta becomes modern
taking dupatta on head vs dupatta in neck… neck dupatta becomes modern
taking dupata in neck vs without dupatta.. without dupata becomes mdoern
without dupatta vs sleeveless… sleeveless becomes modern
actual modern… is the openness of mind… accepting different ideas and working delicately while recognizing difference of opinion… respecting opposite views… is actual form of liberalism…
I think we are limited to appearance… and do not understand the essence of modernism…

Generally I have seen the word to refer to more liberal beliefs and practices; veering away from mainstream views. As mentioned above, people can view conservative folks as “backward” or rigid, etc etc.

I personally think that when someone suggests someone is being modern or conservative , it just highlights how much they themselves have got the acceptance of all things happening around us .
For example, I personally like modesty in clothes. It will be quite evident , the minute I label someone who is wearing a deep neck with words like “modern” or “Liberal” etc . I hardly think its having any impact on the other person , but totally makes clear about where I stand and my thought processes and acceptance of society and its aspects.
Its not a negative thing to like or dislike certain things around us . but it becomes a terrible thing when we start labeling and judging others in unwanted situations .

IMO we should try to condition ourselves to not dislike things that don’t affect us or the society negatively. I have seen topless people on beaches and ladies in burka and it hasn’t really created negative feelings in me. My conflict resolution training helped me with that. We tend to like people who are like us but with conscious effort we stop disliking people who may be different, we may say nothing but if we dislike someone our body language, expressions, tone etc makes it evident and also it creates negative feelings in us.
