"Modern" website design

What’s going on??? Why are all the ‘modern’ websites starting to look exactly like each other?

Large rectangular boxes which change color when cursor rolls over them. Faded text in the menus which is hard to read. Sliding menus as your scroll the page. The layout of the page constantly changes as you scroll. Dialog boxes continuously popping up if I’d like to sign up for the newsletter. NO, I DO NOT WANT YOUR STUPID NEWSLETTER. A constant ‘sidebar’ with icons offering to share content on facebook, twitter, … I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO SHARE IF YOU EVER LET ME READ IT FIRST!

All this, while the actual ‘content’ is lost somewhere. It gets very irritating trying to navigate the webpage on a smaller screen. I need to constantly scroll to get to some actual content and then find 'click here to continue reading…" and get offered signing up for the newsletter… AGAIN.

A case in point: Econsultancy Articles - Digital Marketing & Ecommerce

This is a webpage talking about web design trends for 2014. I can see (on a 14" laptop monitor) three sentences of actual ‘content’ when the page loads and continuous layout re-flow and things sliding in and out when I scroll down.

Do the ‘modern’ web designers think that everyone accesses the pages on a 46" monitor?

Re: "Modern" website design

It is annoying. I had my boss tell me he would love a website like that for our internal and external customer to see the products we offer. Told him to find someone else to do it since I dont want my name on something like that.
