UTD,
It’s nice that someone is showing some interest in this issue :~) There are many different types of genres within the Indian and Pakistani musical fields. What seems to be more popular amongst the young adult generation is your usual sappy love songs. i don’t know what type of songs you prefer, but since you asked specifically for “suggestions”, i’ll list some of my favourites:
Need RealOne:
muziq.net Choose the sixth one on this list.
One of the most loved Pakistani singers is this lady, Noor Jehan. You can check out some of her artistic work here muziq.net
If you like the “Qawwali” type of music, check out this page http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/040007 This is by the Sabri Brothers, ahem i attended one of their qawwalis in Islamabad.
And of course, Qawwali isn’t qawwali without some mention of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan muziq.net
Vital signs and junaid jamshed. Everything else is useless when it comes to "modern" pakistani music.
.
If you're into a heavier style mixed with Jazz fusion and blues overtones, topped with sparkling musicianship , check out "Dusk".
and moody too

Imdad, I hate to wake you up, but 1980's are gone. Its two decades later and there are number of new very good singers and bands. Ever heard of Abrar-ul-haq?

No thank you, I can do without cheap punjabi bhangra songs that all sound the same.
yeah abrar's songs all sound the same.
VS and Junaid are good, although they have never publically admitted to their lifting of other people's work which disappoints me, although they are not the only ones who have done that.
Yeah that is right they are all the same starting with billo dey kar to tery rang rang. Yes they are all the same.. and Vital Signs really do bring out the variety starting from Dil Dil pakistan to samjhana or which ever english song they copied and slightly modeified to make it theirs. Imdad like I said 80's are over ...plus Punjabi's rock...we rule Pakistan and like it or not always will. :D
I like a lot of Junoon, Strings as far as "modern" music goes.
For the folk songs, I like the old Punjabi boliyaan, Madame Noor Jahan, Zarsanga etc.
Ali Zaffar: Channo, Huqa Pani, Rangeen
My favourite Pakistani songs at this moment: Khamaj - Fuzon, Addat - Jal
Ever heard of Haroon, Faakhir, Hadiqa Kiyani, Jawad Ahmed?????
Junoon, VS, JS, Strings, Arroah and that new band- Forto their name " Like to dress like goths and play like santana."
:)
Im a rocker me!
UTD, have you watched Tim Robbin's Dead Man Walking? If you haven't, then you should. In that film, Pakistan's greatest musician ever late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan produced the soundtrack. You can go on ebay, and buy his CDs. Most of his music work are spiritual yet Fateh Ali's music did close the bridge between Eastern and Western world.
