if being muslim is good, why not be ‘hardcore muslims’. saying moderate muslims (like mushy claims to be one) is something good means that being muslim is bad. like being alcoholic is bad, but moderate alcohol is good for health.

We are talking about the religion of Islam and not individuals. SURE, there are muslims who, as individuals, are moderates, liberals and even extremists. BUT, is Islam - religion as practised by majority of muslims - Moderate or extremist/fanatical?
The muslims take credit for the good things so, equally they must take reposonsibilities for the bad things. The KKK as you refered are, part & parcel, the responsibilities of Islam & its leaders.
