Mobile phones at the dinner table

What’s your stance on using mobile phones while having a meal with family/friends? Do you think it’s rude when someone starts typing away at their phone, or when they receive a phone call and decide to answer it?

Does it depend on who you’re with? Is it okay to concentrate on your phone when you’re with friends, but not okay when you’re with older family members?

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

Turn off the phone at the dinner table no matter who you are with, turn off the phone at the masjid, and you better turn off the phone when your mama wants to talk to you :)

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

I think it's rude, unless it's an emergency or something.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

^What?

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

I think it depends on the situation. If its an important phone call that the person is making/receiving, I see nothing wrong with it. Yeah you can turn off the phone, but sometimes people need to make/attend the call, without being intentionally rude...you know...
now if they're just babbling away nonsense, then i'd be offended

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

its rude.

i cant stand ppl (especially couples) that are sitting in a restaurant with one person on their cell and the other watching his/her face. i mean shut it down and have a proper conversation. u're not the president of the united states.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

Yep. My fob cousin does that. Whenever he comes to our place, around dinner time he manages to get a call which he takes like he is oh so important and busy!

It is indeed rude.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

my advise, keep the phone on vibrate put it in your pocket and kep calling yourself..ohhh shoot wrong advise.

okay my advise..keep phone on vibrate, answer only if it is a critical call. I mean you could have some important matter to attend, and it is not always expected. answer the phone, ask the person to hold, step away from were everyone else is..and see what is up. if it is something you need to tackle right now, you do that, if it can wait tell ppl u will call them back.

One may not be the president of united states, but there could be important matters from work, many times you expect that you may be gettin a call because something is going on in which you rinput or sign-off may be needed.

At times, you can see the call from someone who needs help, or there is an emergency. How would you feel if you are with family and your phone rings and its yer buddy, but u decide not to answer it, and then after the meal you answer it to find out that he was calling you to pick his kids up from school since he needs to rush to the hospital because his wife had an accident.

Think about it people..My cellphone is on all the time, and I would excuse myself and answer the call almost always from close friends and family.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

ur hving dinner...y wud u b on the fone...uncless its necessary

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

No one calls me, hence no problem :)

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

In normal circumstances it is considered to be rude. But in my case all my friends know that I am oncall 24-7, I keep it in silent mode and move away from the table.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

In real life, necessary things are not on halt during your dinner time. necessary things are not always planned, emergencies happen, urgent stuff comes up, work related or personal.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

You rang my lord.

Re: Mobile phones at the dinner table

I never take my phone with me to the dinner table at home, it's always left in my room. If I'm out having dinner though, then I would reply to text messages, and I'd only answer it if I thought it was something urgent, or just to inform the person I'm busy and will call them back.
