Sure the customs officials should be reprimanded for demanding bribes and such, but I am surprised that our politicians don’t see anything wrong with giving such large bribes? Especially our Maulvi sahibs.
MMA senator ‘bribes’ Customs to get his car cleared
Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal Senator Rehmat Ullah Kakar alleged on Friday that he had to pay Rs 70,000 bribe and serve a dinner to Karachi custom intelligence officials to get his car cleared. The senator from Balochistan told the Senate that the custom intelligence officials booked his car in Karachi while his nephew was driving it. He alleged that the officials confiscated the car after having suspicions that the car’s chassis number was tempered with. They demanded his nephew to bribe them or they would declare that the car was tempered with. Later, they took Rs 70,000 and a dinner to release the car, he added. He said when he approached the customs superintendent and protested against the injustice, the officials booked the vehicle again threatening him to either pay more money and a reception to get the clearance certificate or they would file a case against him. The senator feared that the officials could temper the chassis. Senators from the treasury and opposition benches demanded that the matter be referred to the Senate Finance Committee to rescue the senator from “corrupt” customs officials.
Re: MMA senator ‘bribes’ Customs to get his car cleared
sorry guys, I am a very anti MMA person but in this case what do you expect this gentleman to do. Go to the courts against the customs folks? I mean that would be the proper thing to do but in Pakistan such an action takes ages.
It appears that he paid so he could get his car back and then raised the issue at a govt level so this sort of stuff can be sorted out.
Now i hope for his sake that there was no hanky panky with the car.
He is a victim here, and while what he did is not right, I am not quite sure what else he could have done.
Our judiciary may be independenty now, but it is still corrupt, ineffective, and slow. Cops are an entirely different story.
I believe a recent survey had cops and the courts as near the top as the most corrupt institutions in Pakistan, so I guess there is a point there.
Re: MMA senator ‘bribes’ Customs to get his car cleared
^^ its not special, he paid 70000 to hide the bigger problem, car must be non custom paid. custom officials threatening him to reveal this. moulvis and mnas driving heavy off road cars mostly smuggled from afghanistan.
if a senator didnt have anything to hide, i am sure customs didnt have anything against him if the car was legel. taking bribe is second part though shameful
