As I thought - power before “principles” for these MMA hypocrites.
No resignations from Senate, PAs: Hafiz
Deputy parliamentary leader of MMA in the National Assembly Hafiz Hussain Ahmed said that the religious alliance would not resign from the Senate and provincial assemblies until grand opposition alliance is formed. Talking to reporters at the Parliament House cafeteria Friday, he said that all the opposition parties had agreed on a grand alliance formation at a meeting held at the residence of Chaudhry Nisar but Benazir Bhutto opposed the idea.
He pointed out that PPP-P had not taken MMA into confidence on CoD and no trust move against the prime minister but even then the religious alliance supported it. He also criticised PPP for its support to the controversial women bill in the parliament. He said he has not yet received any notice from the JUI-F President over his resignation.
Agencies add: Hafiz Husain Ahmad said, **“We have decided to resign from the National Assembly. We will tender resignations from the Senate and provincial assemblies seats when grand opposition alliance will be formed.” ** He told that no decision has, so far, been taken on formulation of grand alliance between the MMA and ARD. A joint strategy will have to be evolved in this connection, he added. “I have resigned from the National Assembly in the light of decisions taken by the MMA top leadership and Supreme Council”, he informed. I have complied with this decision and now I consider it useless to sit in the assembly”, he asserted. The assembly will stand dissolved when the MMA resigns, he claimed. He also announced that he will contest the forthcoming election against MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain from Karachi.
The MMA central leadership has stressed that the religious alliance should also seek opposition opinion before taking final decisions on resignations over WPP issue. Maulana Fazl ur Rahman said “ARD and PML-N are pressurising us that MMA should not resign from assembly and join hands with Opposition to launch countrywide anti government movement.” He said that MMA should tender resignations along with other Opposition parties and make important decision after considering Opposition parties opinion. The component parties of religious groups will be consulted on this matter in parliamentary party meeting”, he said while addressing a Press conference at his residence here Monday. ** “We are also considering other options than resignations “,** he remarked.
Commenting on Govt-PPP Parliamentarian deal, he said PPP-P has committed political suicide by supporting government on Women Protection Bill (WPB). It has lost confidence of the people. He said women rights were guaranteed in Hasba Bill but the federal government resorted to the court and got its enforcement suspended. On the other hand no safeguards are laid down for women rights in WPB, he added. On MMA-PML(Q) political alliance, he said how ironical it was that on one hand PML-Q was enacting legislation against Quran and Sunnah and on the other side were expecting support from the Ulema.
Leader of the opposition and secretary-general Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday said that no decision would be taken in haste to quit the National Assembly. He was talking to newsmen during a two-day meeting of Majlis-e-Shoora of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) here. Maulana Fazlur Rehman said they were under pressure from the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) and various other quarters not to resign from the National Assembly in a hurry. “We have never taken a reverse gear on the issue of resignations but will adopt a careful strategy in this regard,” he said. He said that without caring for accusations of the ministers, they would take a decision which is in the interest of the country and democracy.
Meanwhile, sources in the JUI-F said most of the members of the party’s Shoora were in favour of deferring the decision to resign from parliament for the time being. The sources said the meeting was considering three options of starting a movement against General Musharraf and his government before or after resignations and tendering resignations along with other opposition parties. “Whatever strategy is adopted at the meeting will be taken to the parliamentary party meeting of the MMA, which is scheduled to meet in Islamabad on December 6-7,” a JUI leader said. To a question, Fazl said the anger expressed by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on the proposal given by Ulema to Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to amend the Women Protection Act were not understandable.
Qazi Hussain is never media shy nor short of words, but yesterday history was made when he was left scurrying from the media and offering no comments.
Insiders said during the meeting, MMA president and JI chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad succumbed to JUI-F’s reluctance to quit parliament and agreed to refer the issue back to the supreme council.
Qazi Hussain Ahmed’s demand to allow legislators of his party to resign unilaterally was rejected.
Appearing dejected, the JI chief declined to meet mediapersons waiting outside, and left the place immediately after the meeting.
ISLAMABAD, Feb 13: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) on Tuesday rescinded its earlier decision to resign from the National Assembly and decided to end boycott of the ongoing session of the lower house.
The six-party alliance also retained Qazi Hussain Ahmed as president and Maulana Fazlur Rahman as secretary-general.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the alliance’s central council comprising three representatives from each component party at the residence of Qazi Hussain here.
The MMA central council had earlier announced that in the event of passage of the women protection bill, their legislators would resign from their seats. The decision was opposed by the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) and later by Jamiat Ahle Hadith, Tehrik-i-Islami and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Sami).
The Jamaat-i-Islami and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan were strong advocates of quitting the National Assembly, but they changed their stand “in the interest of the alliance’s unity”.
Briefing the press, deputy secretary general Liaqat Baloch and secretary information Pir Ijaz Hashmi said the alliance had decided to discuss the issues of resignation and an anti-government movement with other opposition parties for a joint stand. Mr Baloch said the council had decided that protests against the ‘un-Islamic’ women protection act would be continued.
The roll of the religious parties has always been very negative in this country! They caused to topple down the elected government of Bhutto in 1977! Bhutto did not do any mass rigging in the elections except few (as a result of his dictorial personality) such as abduction of his oppnent Abbasi! But these mullahs ran a movement in the name of islam against him!
I wonder why not our new born media make documentaries on such idiots, present , past and far past statments. its good material for reality based comedy and some exposure for forgetfull people of Pakistan.
