Well as I told you that this same party propsed pakhtunkhwa. Now why would they do that? Islamic names, that there makes no sense, since islam is not to one specific race, but to any and all. Now I coulduse this example with benazir or harif who were democratically elected. And we all know they did many things that the majority never wanted.

Because they are playing to the false nationalism of Pushtoon lefties (aka Kabuli Kommies).
Thanks to Pushtoon lefties, Afghanistan has been burned to the ground, turned into rubble, and left with half-burnt bodies piled high in Bamyan.
Had these Pushtoon lefties gotten any positive vision, they would have concentrated on building highways, schools, universities, and hospitals.
However the name for these lefties is a magic potion, or Alla-Din ka charagh (magic lamp) that will instantly turn Afghanistan or "neo-Afghanistan" aka Frontier aka Pashtoon-land aka Pakhtun-hawa (leftie hot air) into the land of milk and honey.
These neo-Afghani-lefties have bombed the heck out Kabul, Kandhar, and Jalalabad. Sadly now we have a Kharashzada Kharazai playing flute in his Kabuli-Kassle while Tom, Dick, and Harry of NATO protect Afghan @r$e from the homos of Mullahtic types.
The same neo-ahghans aka Pashtoon-lefties want to burn the prosperous cities of Peshawar, Kohat, and Bannu into their Afghan Jannat of Kandhar. Sad! utterly Sad!

Islam doesnt promote any one ethnicity over another, everyone is the same under Islam… Why on one hand do the people of NWFP claim to be the most religous of provices and yet not appreciate this fundamental truth?

There was never a consensus last time this was voted in th NWFP assembly in 1997. At that time some Pakhtun members voted against the "Pakhtunkwa" resolution, and practically all the members elected from Hazara abstained in the vote. As it is, the MMA are actually proposing to move a resolution for a vote in the assembly on all the proposed names. So there will be a choice of 8 possible names:-
Abasin
Afghania
Bab-ul-Islam
Dar-ul-Islam
Islam Var
Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa
Pashtunistan
Although, the MMA has a majority (67 of the 124 seats) in the assembly, I have a hunch that their votes will be divided amongst the three Islamic names that have been proposed, so no one name will get a majority.

MMA removing Pashto from course: ANP
The Awami National Party has alleged that the MMA-led provincial government is removing the subject of Pashto from the syllabus under a planned conspiracy. ANP provincial secretary-general Mian Iftikhar Hussain said in a press statement issued here on Sunday that whosoever had tried to do away with the subject of Pashto from the course failed in the past and Pashto became much stronger. He said that the most of the parties in the NWFP were losing ground and people were joining the ANP in large numbers.

Interesting discussion. Its a non issue but it has been turned into a disease with no cure. I do not see any harm coming to pashtuns, pakistan or islam if the province gets a proper name. Lets look at the other three provinces, named Balochistan, Sindh, and Punjab. Now, don't you think its logical and common sense to name NWFP in a way that represents the identity and history of this particualr region and its people. I think any decent name but NWFP would be acceptable. I personally like Khyber but i don't think the other names Pakhtunkhwa, Islam Var are bad either. Gandhara was once suggested as well. The main problem is the petty differences among pashtuns. The naming issues should not become a matter of one's ego and scoring points. This province needs a name and North West Frontier Province is a Ridiculous name and it makes NO sense. Those politicians and assembly members need to sit down and, instead of accusing each others and using cheap tactics, should resolve this once and for all. A name that's acceptable to all different ethnicities of the provinve although pashtuns make up majority so its natural they should have more say in it.

The NWFP assembly once passed renaming resolution in favor of Pakhtunkhwa with thumping majority. The new renaming initive seems to be the individual act of this immaturish Kishwar Naheed that wouldn't win favor with even MMA members.

It shows that their primary identity is most definately not their own ethnicity. Pashtun nationalism is dying and dying fast.
The opposite is happening rather. Nationalism is a phenomenon brought about by modernization of which the newly emerged middle-classes and the petty bourgeos are usually the protagonists. This is exactly what is happening on Pashtun Land. Educated Pashtuns from middle and lower-middle classes are especially exposed to nationalistic sentiments and Pashtun Nationalism is on rise in them. Interestingly, people associated with Islami groups e.g. Jammiat-i-Talaba are becoming fervent nationalists.

The present naming initiative is a cheap tactic of Punjab-dominated establishment. It is very scared of Pashtun nationalism. Reasons are obvious; Pashtuns have the demographic strength, the history, the resources, and the center of gravity to launch a movement for greater autonomy. That is why there is instability in Afghanistan and there is this support for MMA (Mullah-Military Alliance) and other terrorists/fundo organizations. That is also why the federal govt is not willing to integrate FATA with NWFP or to enforce administrative and political reforms there.
MMAs are only sandbags behind which there are other forces calling shots. Islamic nationalism is the only instrument in the hands of these forces to block Pashtun nationalism and other nationalist movements.
But there is a limit to using religion as an instrument of politics. Long over is the age of theocracy. Theocratic movements are also on the throes of death. Soon would die the remainscent also though may be voilently to give way to stable and rational identities/entities built around natural basis like language, culture, territory, history, etc.
History has always favored natural and evolved entities compared to artificial creations without proper natural basis.

Malik if u don't mind me asking you, what ethnicity do you belong to?? i mean are you a pashtun, hindko speaker, or seraikee speaker?? because i want to know if you belong to NWFP in any shape or form. Because if you are not one of the above, your opinion does not count. Its for the people of that province to decide however they want to name it. How can u accept a nonsense name like NWFP for 58 years?? which province do u belong to anyway?

Defense of Frontier is the responsibility of all the provinces. How else we can protect Peshawar, Kohat, and Bannu from Kabuli Jannat. The same jannat that brought to us the bombed out cities of Kabul, Kandhar, and Jalalabad.
Naming and other ethnic tensions in Frontier is an old Kabuli ploy to bring death and destruction to the region.
These primitive Kabuli tribals want to live just like their comrade tribals of Mogadishu, Ethiopia, Liberia, Sierra Leon, Yemen, and you name many other African tribes.
Look what these Kabuli tribals did to their own city. They made it a replica of Mogadishu.
Sad for the ordinary citizens of Kabul, and utterly despicable on part of Kabuli tribals.

Just take a minute and think and then get back to me. can U accept a province with no name . think of North West Frontier Provine.. this is not a name it tells u the geographical location of this piece of land which the makes the north west frontier of pakistan. This is a ridiculous name and it need to change. It is not going to break Pakistan into pieces . i consider myself a patriot and always would like the best for pakistan. I consider all punjabis,sindhis and baloch my muslim brothers and they should eb more supportive in this process then actually getting defensive and paranoid. This NWFP names really needs to go. And by the way why don't u help us come up with a reasonable name? lets see what you come up with. And one more thing if people in punjab are called punjabis and sindhis in sindh what do u think people from NWFP be called??

NWFP (Sooba Sarhad) is a name that has been in place since 1910 that makes it pretty close to 100 years old. And you still have problem with the name?
This is like you go to 100 year khan Baba Ji and tell him that his name "Gulab Khan" is "no name". It is not Islamic and this 100 years old Baba Ji should change his name to "Mohammad Khan". This will make the name more "Islamic" otherwise "Gulab Khan" is no name.
You know what that Baba Ji would tell you. "Take a hike!"
Next time you want to make fun of a 100 year old province named Sooba Sarhad, people will say to you "take a hike!".

Antiobl, I sometimes & most of the times dont like ur views on certain matters, but lets be honest here. I dont like this name change proposed by MMA either. Im VERY much born from NWFP. I dont think u have ever come across my threads, but Im a malik with a hindko root. My relatives are born all over the place in NWFP. They have a whole village under their control...sardar garhi, which is mainly hindko. I have many times debated with them this name change, & they have all been disgusted at this thought. They say, why dont give us our basic protection, our basic needs, our basic requirements...health, education & better infrastructure. All this energy is being wasted on a name. NWFP may be sick or perverted, but what is the point of changing it, when there is no change in the state itself...???
I have seen overseas hindko & pathans, come from Europe, US, other countries to build nice beautiful homes in Peshawar. Even Imran Khan won a seat from Swat, has roots in NWFP. What this country needs is unity, not division. Naming it anyone of the names, isolates us hindkos. We were the original inhabitants of Peshawar. There are documented facts on this in the Peshawar museum as well.

Only English speaking Kabulis (oxymoron) have issue with NWFP. The local version of this name is *Sooba Sarhad. *
Sooba Sarhad has been the name of this region since 1910. Another 4 years and we should celebrate the 100 years anniversary of the Sooba and its beautiful name.
