First of all EVERYONE should be allowed to have marches and protest, as long as they get prior permission and do it peacefully.
Now, MMA should get extra concessions because they need to let out their frustrations somehow. If they don't then it all comes out on women and minorities. So, I say let them march all they want.
BTW, when they talk about Million March ... are they copying the US's civil rights movement marches?
^ sure indians can come too if that's what you mean... and why would there be women at a march that reads million man march use some common sense
and I think the PPP MQM Muslim Leauge and all the other paindoo parties and their paindoo supporters need to stop crying and become man enough to actually hold a protest
Political expediency or old habits, whatever the case maybe your question is absolutely correct. Ruling elite (Army+Beuracrats+Feudals+Religious Parties) have had their cake and ate it also for far too long. They did not flinch when East Pakistan was going niether are they willing to concede anything now when the country is standing at the brink of becoming completly talibanized.
Mush may have liberal agenda, but he is one man. Rest or majority of the military brass are a product of Zia+Jamaat indoctrination where Islamic fundamentalist were promoted and professional soldiers with independent views were sidelined. Civil services suffered the same fate. Feudals have been astute enough to undersatnd how to perpetuate their monoply through Army+Mulla alliance. As for the religious clergy, well their recent popularity has resulted after twenty years of propaganda and indoctrination by the think (stink) tanks of Pakistani elite who were worried that Pakistan needs an idealogy to remain united. Thus the indoctrination. These idiots tried the same medicine in E Pakistan at the fag end of its existence, but you do not stop a wave of popular sentiment by gun or propaganda.
Mush & Co are banking on their tried and tested political model i.e., Army+Civil services+Feudals+Clergy alliance will carry them forward. Any crumbs thrown to the liberal elements of Pakis is a token of their generosity which can be withdrawn whenever and however they please(Gujranwalla marathon is a classic example). This Govt has been very adept in projecting a liberal method of governance while promoting economic values, yet they collude and conspire with the right wing and recent events are a stark reminder that this country needs poltical parties with grass root support, not marketing franchise which can be assmbled whenever required by its masters.
Only the MMA can save Pakistan form the wicked Musharraf and his army followers.
Wid continued liberlisation of Pakistan, well become anotehr Turkey in a couple of years. Inshallah wid teh MMA an islamic system can be implemented to stop thsi westerniation of Pakistan.
Only islam has the anwer for these problems, why has Pakistan nver achieved stability beocoz its peopel liek america who divide us and peopel like musharaf who change our ways to suit the non-muslim world
islam was not teh major factor in teh 1971 war, it was state atriocites agaisnt the bengali peopel by teh secular and military governemnts of Pakistan
seriouly i tink islam in Pakistan is a race thing- while Pathans, balcuhis and kashmiris woudl like an islamic state, the more liberal punjabis and sindhis and mohajirs want a secualr state. what is ur view?
Oh belive me Musharraf and MMA consider each other necessary for their existence. Now, the statements can be opposing, and they might be confrontational one time or the other, but they like each other.
Because literacy rate is quite high in Sindh and Panjab. The rest of the ppl r generally backward (well, the exceptions being ANP, BNP, BNA, and other progressive parties)
Most Punjabis I know could care less… They are happy with the status quo. Sindhis not sure, Mohajirs I think are mostly secular, but have their share of rligious fundos aswell. Kashmiris are very secular from what I hear.
MMA is the B TEAM of musharaf and i have said tht hundreds of times before...they always provided "Secret" support to musharaf on LFO or wardi or wht eva..
musharaf is a clever politican..he uses his cards very efficiently...when his differences increased with MMA leaders and also due to strong american pressure,he became ppp friend...and now he smashed PPP out...musharaf u rock man....MMA rocks
Religion (Islam) and ethnicity are two separate identities which contradict each other. Either you are a Muslim in its true spirit or a xyz ethnicity. From your argument its quite clear that the Taliban form of government is the only solution. Since taliban were popular in the Western (NWFP & Bal) belt of Pakistan, you find solace in ethnicity and find no difficulty in associating ethnicity with religious beliefs. By the way, Kashmiris are hard core tradionalists sunnis or shia’s, not a trace of your opinion cause given a choice they would be secularist cause the united Kashmir has large populations of Hindus and Buddhists.
Mush & Co are already in cahoots with the mullas so what is your problem.
“This is such a strange country,” says Shabbir Shah, a councillor of the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
“Here, the mentors of people like [Taleban head] Mullah Omar are free to hold rallies and take out processions, but those espousing a liberal agenda similar to that of President Musharraf are barred from doing so.”
By “mentors of Mullah Omar” he means most of the country’s religious leadership.
Mr Shah was one of the handful of PPP workers who had reached Bilawal House II, the Lahore residence of former premier Benazir Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari.
and how is that different from any time in the history of pakistan where govt and opposition see each other as a necessary evil..keep people stuck in the political back and forth while not holding either the ruliong party or the opposition for doign their job. Aside from the kabbadi for kursi..when has the ruliong party or the opposition done their job.
Lets be fair here, and not claim it as if this is unique and new to Pakistani politics. Nawaz and BB needed one another just as much, or even more. The question is, what results did they produce in their rule. Answer can be found in world bank reports.
explain to me how is it different than how political leaders have handeled this in past, the mutual sustainabilty of govt and main opposition has always been a curse. They prop opposition up, because they need opposition to survive.
^ When u call religous extremists as the biggest threat, but then facilitate their politics all around the country, then it is big time hypocrisy, or LIE.
NS and BB hit each other quite hard in their rule. Asif Zardari was imprisoned and millions of dollars spent just to prosecute him. Similarly, BB called MQM enemy of state, and then punished it very hard for years.
If you open up a dictionary and lookup the word "chor", Zardaris picture would be there along with reference in etemology to also see, "Mr. Ten percent". But, the real travisty is that we still have truly idiotic and ignorant masses who continue to support these PPP scums.....
