Mississippi Masala

Anyone seen this one?
Comments?

I caught a flash of it last night and was, once again, disappointed by the representation of desis in it. How do they come off showing Sarita Chowdhery as Sharmila Tagore’s daughter?

I mean look at the two…they don’t even look remotely related!

And why is it that desi girls in such films are shown as darker than dark, mousy individuals with more facial hair than their fathers?

haiN?

I didn't know there was another desi flick based in USA.

Whats the name of it? I don't remember seeing anything like that.

no one has seen it? weird.
It was Denzel Washington's earlier movies. People should watch Salaam Bombay by the same director, that was a great movie.

Saw it a loooong time ago when it was aired on TV. I don't think I was impressed because I don't remember much of it.

run of the mill stuff.. nothing much to it .. not much meet to the bone .. oh wait thrier was .. we got to see miss Chowadry's hiney.... just some 'masala' nothin cookin here

Hey one more thing
These things are hard to explain
For some it seems strange... to swallow
The frontier of our minds
Is the last place we find
But maybe the first place we should go

watched it quite a while back, and liked it too. not many desi flicks have such powerful storylines. whatever flaw there might be in the casting is more than made up for by the string of ironies that keep popping up through out the movie. a patriotic ugandan lawyer of indian origin driven out of uganda by idi amin's racist policies finds himself a racist when it comes to his daughter's choice of husband; the indian family which has been out of india since generations trying hard to stick on to prejudices and practices from the old country; desi girl turned down from marital alliance coz she's too dark.. there are a few more subtle ones, i dont remember too well.

IMO, the main weakness of the movie wasnt it's casting. in fact, i couldnt care less if daughter doesnt look like mama, lots of such cases around. one flaw that stood out was ineffective dialog delivery - probably because most of the actors werent all that comfortable with english.

on the whole, definitely not a run-of-the-mill desi movie. worth watching, atleast for the sake of variety in storyline. and i thought sarita chaudhry looked quite pretty - she's got rich lips.

got one more - the "african"-american community resenting the decision of denzel washington to hook up with someone who is an african, because she isnt black.

I thought the movie was pretty lame. even Bhaji on the beach was a better movie, or my beautiful launderette. More substance to them

there was another movie I saw with an indian guy's expereince in US with his girlfriend and community and families expectations for his marriage. I forgot the name of it, so if anyone knows pleas elt em know.

agreed... movie had no substance. WOuldn't recommend making an extra effort to rent it.

Some reasonable flicks: East is East (this movie is just too funny) My son the Fanatic (om puri is not that bad plus its got the "extremist" twist to it).

Movie Definetely Never to be Seen: American Desi (I'll pay you to watch something else)

Okay send me a cheque...

There's another flick that I wasted time watching.....I think it's called "The Seduction of Maria".

Really, really twisted. About this girl who takes a job in a restaurant as a hostess, ends up marrying the owner's gay son who's carrying on with a local boy.

Her father-in-law takes a shine and the two of them have an affair.....until her brother shows up.....and then she gets back to carrying on with him too.

In the end she's about to have a baby and the three men are fighting over who's it is.......sick eh?

its a catch 22, sometimes you may miss great movies dut to bad reviews and sometimes the reviews tell you the whole story and thus the movie is not enjoyable.

But maybe if you are going to go for something obscure you may want to read reviews and not the story of the movie.

I recall bunch of the desi guys went to see Shahrukh Khan movie "koyla" in Philly since it was at the international film festival. Turned out it was another movie called "Kolya" heheeh.. now that was an extreme example of not doing any research..but u know what I mean.

but u know what I mean.

No Fraudia, we are completely at loss.

Yeah....I usually read a few reviews but frankly, I don't trust them. I have yet to find a critic that I am frequently in agreement with.

Besides.....both Masala and Maria were just on tv and that's how I caught them.....nothing else was on.

Whatever the case, I would love to be involved in a project where a "true to life desi family living in North America" is depicted.

I think they need to make a movie of the "The American Brat"
