Although I think these contests are silly, I don’t see a reason why people should oppose them. There are tons of silly contests all year around so this one is no different. If one is not interested one should not watch them, but protests like the ones which are held each year are equally silly. These contests donot in any way enhance or diminish a country’s prestige. If an 18 year old wants to make money and be famous this way…good for her. I think the sponsors (cosmetic companies) want to make money in India so they are doling out these awards to Indians – thats my conspiracy theory. But I think you are wrong when you suggest that Indians give these contests importance. A few people were excited when India first won it but now people are pretty much indifferent. For me fashion shows where they exibit models wearing clothes that no one will ever wear in public, are equally silly – why just single out beauty pageants.
But then I know there may be people who are against them. I personally feel its a personal decision. But I am just a liberal, anti-commie, pro-capitalist Indian

u are definitely right…sorry dont know who exactly said it but someone did say it was the way she spoke that made her win her place as the finalist…
she definitely gave answers without any pause and as though it came from the bottom of her heart…maybe it did…basically she said the right things at the right times…winning over all the judges votes…but she did look beautiful in her evening gown…and i also knew that she was very likely gonna win coz of her confident replies to whatever jerry springer asked her! good for her anyway!
but u all know what this means dont u? just that most probably shes gonna join bollywood by the time she gets home!

I dunno if language is a hinderence.Before 5 -6 years,i.e after Sushmita Sen stated the spree of miss world & miss Universe of 5-6 indian girls in a row,the Venezuela,girls who always answered in there venezuelean spanish,won consecutively ,so many times that Venezuela is sore with India for having taken the winning streak from them.In fact there is danger if ever the contest s held in Venezuela,the contest will need extraa security for being harmed by disgruntal venezueleans!!Talk about not caring,some ppl. care TOO MUCH!
